There's something about God of War that makes everyone love it. So far I haven't found it. That said, I guess I'll just have to go through every awesome thing about this game.
The game starts off like many good stories do, at the end. Kratos, our badass protagonist is atop the highest peak in all of Greece, and jumps off it with a feling of abandonment. You then play through the events leading up to his suicide, all the while uncovering his tragic past.
The first thing you notice that is just plain awesome is the look of it. It is one pretty game. Each locale is uniquely different from the last, and the automated camera system really helps accent the grand views that accompany every single level.
Next, and probably most important is the combat system. Each of Kratos' moves is based off of a fairly simple combo system. Even though the way to do these combo's is fairly easy to master, when and how to use them is another story, Some are quick and powerful, but require Kratos to take a moment to get back on his feet, while others a longer and more drawn out, and take more timing to get all the way through, but don't require you to take a minute of vulnerability.
Later in the game, you recieve magic from the Gods. For instance, Posidon gives you the ability to rain down lightening with in a small area around Kratos, (which always made me curious, considering Posidon is the ruler of the Sea). You also become able to freeze enemies with Medusa's head, throw lightening, summon souls from Hades to fight for you, and wield a giant badass sword, a la the manga/anime character Guts. Also, as the game progresses you can upgrade eash ability to your liking, producing stronger, newer moves.
The enemies are also quite challenging, which is something many brawlers never get quite right. There's about a dozen different types of enemies, and they all require separate strategies. For instance, the smaller, more mobile enemies need immediate attention, since they can easily swarn around you, while the larger enemies require more of a stick-and-move tactic. Some enemies require you to follow button patterns shown to you to eliminate them quickly, such as you have to make certain movements on the analog stick to rip of a Gorgon's head.
The boss battles are quite amazing. Each of them quite challenging, and all have a very rewarding ending moves. However, much to my chagrin, there's only three, which is the only thing I really dislike about this game.
The soundtrack is phenominal, as is the voice acting. but really, who needs to know the specifics?
The last thing that ticked me off is the fact you can't control the camera, because the pre-made angles aren't always the best.
Other than that, buy it, now. It's short, it's cheap, it's awesome. 'Nuff said.
