An old-school shooter that provides short-term fun.

User Rating: 6 | God Mode X360

"God Mode" is a third-person downloadable game that recalls "Smash TV" and other similar arcade-style shooters. Graphically, it looks good, but the gameplay lacks major depth. This blast-a-thon carries a thick satirical tone complete with outlandish costumes and weapons that brings to mind "Saints Row" and "Gotham City Impostors". There is no story, only a thin plot that is summed by a tongue-in-cheek narrator. You play as a deceased modern-day descendent of an ancient Greek god. In order to escape purgatory, you must fight your way out of arenas filled with various Greek monsters that are out to kill you...again.

As the game starts out, you select your character and vote to play through one out of five maps with up to three other players online. If you survive waves of hordes, you're treated to a bonus room filled with currency. Variety comes in enabling moderators (there are 8) and selecting from three difficulty levels. As you level up, customization options become available. Several weapons, skins and performance upgrades can be purchased with the currency you earn. The speechless character you use carries two firearms and can unleash a melee attack, but there are no grenades or explosives in the game. The main goal in "God Mode" is just to blast as many baddies as possible. It's not too exciting, but it's a decent way to kill a few hours. The numerous unlockables and various in-game challenges help encourage replay.

This is an old-school shooter lacks the depth of today's popular survival modes. If you're into retro gaming, you'll get some enjoyment out of it, but the game is overpriced at $10. It should be priced at five bucks. Overall, the game is best enjoyed in small doses due to its one-dimensional gameplay. It's fun, but don't expect to play it extensively. I'll give it a 6 out of 10 due to the small number of maps and lack of game modes.
