Don't believe the bad reviews: Heracles is a fun, old-school RPG romp
User Rating: 7.5 | Hercules no Eikou: Tamashii no Shoumei DS
GameSpot, IGN, why all the hate? You've slammed Glory of Heracles for being a boring, repetitive waste of time, yet you praise old-school retreads like Final Fantasy I through ?? Yes, Heracles is an old-school grinder. Yes, the graphics are circa 1995. Yes, the random battles pop up a bit too often and are generally not much of a challenge (except for the boss battles). But, the exact same thing can be said for many of the "major" legacy titles that have been appearing on the DS with increasing regularity. And at least Heracles brings us a new story – and an interesting new battle and skill system. Plus a story that, while a bit goofy at the worst of times, is written with a certain self-deprecating wit that's refreshing in a category that all too often takes itself way too seriously.
If you have a soft spot for old-school, turn-based RPGs, Glory of Heracles is an entertaining addition to that admittedly vast category. And if you want something to fill the gap between now and when the next Shin Megami title is released, this fun little romp through Ancient Greece might just be the ticket.
