Ghostbusters: The Video Game User Review
- Difficulty:
- Easy
- Time Spent:
- 10 Hours or Less
- The Bottom Line:
- "Worth playing"
Okay here are the problems I have with this game:
1) I love the variety of weapons you unlock. I love the feel of shooting the proton packs and even catching the ghosts. But moving around is weird. Running is odd. I hate having to push an X-Y-A-B button for running. It makes more sense that if you move with one of the analog sticks, that you press down on the thing when you want to sprint. Or maybe I'm spoiled by Gears?
2) I hate the fact that you play as a generic rookie. They should have made it where you could customize your character to look more like you. I mean the Wii version lets you pick the sex of the character. What happened here? Isn't this supposed to be the next gen system?
3) The jokes that are lifted from the original movie sound lame in this story. They shouldn't have referenced particular lines like that. If this wasn't written by Aykroyd and Ramis then I wouldn't have minded so much. I would have chalked it up to the game developers being fans, and throwing in one or two as an inside joke. In the world of VHS and DVDs, we know the original movie inside-out. Give us only new jokes. Please.
4) Contrary to what the Gamespot reviewer said, I have died on one of the levels a few times (the portal level - going up the stairs). OH MY GOD watching the load screen was so annoying. I have a feeling this was the reason why you don't die so easily in this game.
5) The rest of the game is pretty easy so i finished it all in a day. So that's when i decided to try the online portion of the game (last night) and I had a hell of a time trying to connect with others on Live. I read something that Live was on the fritz last night, so maybe it's not the game's fault. But it was then that I wished I could play a multi-player mode, offline, but with just the A. I. counterparts. Since they were so good in the game.
6) The relationship between Bill Murray and Alyssa Milano seems.... forced. I love Bill Murray, but even he was 2nd rate in this game. He almost seemed... creepy. Maybe it was the animation? The really stars of this game were Aykroyd and Ramis. True to the characters and fun to listen to and watch their animated characters.
Now the things I thought made the game worth the buy:
1) The weapons are so awesome. I loved every single one of them. Love the fact that your character "tests" them out for the team. Good story idea.
2) Loved visiting the old locations from the first film. Liked the explanation as to why we were going back there. Overall I was pretty impressed with the game's story. I was expecting something else though after reading different story ideas that were leaked over the internet for GB3. I guess they must have removed some of those elements now that GB3 might actually get made. We'll see...
3) Loved the cursed artifacts descriptions. I plan to play through the game again just to collect them all. Along with the other achievements I didn't get the first time around.
4) When I did get online, it was fun finding people who were serious about working together to get the ghosts. They didn't care about whether they caught the most. Some people were actually standing guard and taking down ghosts just to set them up for another player to trap. I thought that was awesome, and shows the spirit of the game. Pun not intended.
Final verdict: Buy it if you see yourself playing online a lot. Rent it if you just want to play out an "okay" episode of The Real Ghostbusters, minus Dave Coulier and Arsenio Hall.
If they ever make a sequel to this game (you know they will if GB3 gets made), I hope they make it like Grand Theft Auto where you can run around the city of New York and do side missions, along side the main story. Or even co-op modes where you and a friend can work together in the open world game. That would be the next step and something I would totally be in to.

Ghostbusters is a great single-player adventure. But one playthrough and you'll be done most likely.
