Ghostbusters: The Video Game Updated Hands-On

  • Wii

We came, we saw, we played a new level of Atari's new ghostbusting adventure.

Spengler. Stantz. Zeddemore. Venkman. And you. Welcome to your new job as the fifth Ghostbuster in Atari's upcoming video game adaption of the hit '80s movie series, Ghostbusters: The Video Game. The publisher, who acquired publishing rights to the game after it was sold off by Activision, showed off the latest build of the game at a recent press event. It was the first time we'd seen the game since E3, and, based on our time with the game, it seems like developers at Terminal Reality (and Red Fly Studio, which is handling the Wii version) have been keeping their heads down and focused on the ghosts, despite the game's publishing turmoil.

Unofficially billed by producers as the "third Ghostbusters movie," Ghostbusters: The Video Game is set two years after Ghostbusters II and finds the four original Ghostbusters in pretty good standing with New York City and its citizens. However, because catching ghosts isn't cheap, the city government decides to bring in some oversight to the 'busters operation in the form of Walter Peck, the quartet's bureaucratic nemesis in the original movie. Peck will be in charge of Ghostbusters oversight, constantly keeping the heroes aware of the ever-increasing costs of doing their particular form of business.

Atari was showing off both the 360 and Wii versions of Ghostbusters, and each version of the game featured a slightly different take on the same level. In the level, the Ghostbusters are in the familiar setting of the New York Public Library, investigating the elderly paranormal librarian (who happens to be the first ghost encountered in the original movie). Just as in the movie, it's only a matter of time before the ghost's calm demeanor turns ugly in a big way.

Before the librarian blew her top, however, we got chance to check out the basics of gameplay and combat. Ghostbusters is a third-person action game, with a camera that sits just over the shoulder of your character, giving you a view not just of the action happening in front of you, but also your proton pack, the nuclear-powered high-tech gizmo that serves as your weapons arsenal. As in the movies, the proton pack is used to fire a stream of energy with which you can wrangle rogue ghosts into a trap. The proton pack in the games is more flexible than the one used in the film, and you'll be able to upgrade your pack as you make your way through the game. These different weapon types include a stasis stream that you can use to freeze a ghost, or a shock blast you can use to defeat them. Your proton pack will also clue you in to your character's remaining health and other vital information.

You'll need to make full use of the proton pack in Ghostbusters because in addition to trapping ghosts, you'll also be fighting enemies as you make your way through the levels. As we made our way through the library level, we fought several spirits that took on physical presence by forming makeshift bodies with the many books scattered on shelves; a quick blast of the proton pack was all it took to bring them down.

Destroying ghosts is fun but your main goal in the game will be trapping certain spirits that are causing trouble. In the both the 360/PS3 and the Wii version, you'll first need to capture your ghost in the stream emanating from your proton pack. You can also stun the ghosts once they're caught by slamming them to the ground. The mechanics for trapping ghosts differes depending on the version you're playing. In the 360/PS3 game, you'll use a combination of the analog sticks and the triggers; over on the Wii, things get a bit more complicated. Aiming the stream is as simple as pointing your Wii Remote--but once a ghost is caught, an arrow will appear on either side of the aiming reticule, indicating which way you need to move the remote to wrangle your ghostly target. It took us several tries to get it right, and while it might get easier with practice, we wouldn't mind if the developer went back and re-examined this aspect of the controls.

Controls are the big differentiator between the 360/PS3 versions of Ghostbusters and the Wii game, but it isn't the only difference. Unlike the 360/PS3 game, which is going for an exaggerated realism, the Wii version has a more cartoonish presentation, with stylized characters and slightly less menacing-looking monsters. Even though both games cover largely the same territory in terms of levels and dialogue, the Wii game is obviously being aimed at a younger crowd. Both versions will also feature the impressive damage effects, where seemingly every wall, column, or piece of furniture you blast with your proton pack will suffer accordingly.

With full involvement from the original cast members Dan Akroyd (The Blues Brothers, Earth vs. the Spider), Bill Murray Lost in Translation, Garfield: The Movie, Ernie Hudson (Oz, Best of the Best: Without Warning), and Harold Ramis (Stripes, Orange County), there's little doubt that this game has the Ghostbusters cred. What remains to be seen is if the game makes busting ghosts as much fun as it seemed in the original movies. We'll know when the game makes its release in 2009, likely just in time to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original movie.

I hope it doesn't take up a lot of space on the Wii. I only have 100 blocks left!

I hope it's challenging, but not just frustrating. I don't mind control schemes that take a while to master (skate, for example). But when they are just frustrating, that's different. It sounded to me like these controls will just take some getting used to. If they get it right, even with the more cartoony graphics, the "battles" will feel more realistic on the wii.

Hooray for the cartoony-style graphics! It reminds of the old cartoon show from way back in the day.

The artstyle choice they made with the Wii version is just because the Wii isn't suited to realism but can do crisp cartoony stuff with colourful ease(look at SMG)and nothing more.
I would have thought that using a Wiimote/nunchuck set up would/could be brilliant if implemented correctly and to see which version I'll get will take a bit of research. I know they had a whole team working from the ground up on both versions so if they do get the motion controls right I like the idea of dragging the ghosts around manually-it's more like the film isn't it?

For the very first time I can read well thought comments and not only hate comments like "all hail the ps3/360 version, the wii version its just a toned-down version which sucks". So a big applouse to: GUNSTAR; ukotranto and baldyman666. You guys: thank you.

ukotranto, well said Guy.... speaking for myself, Im one of the few that enjoy the ease and convenience of Game consoles over a PC..... NEO-GEO Atari Jaguar, - panasonic 3d0, Sega Saturn(japanese port) Dreamcast---man the list goes on- ive owned most of them over the years.....and sometimes I bought the system just so I could play one or 2 games for it!!! if you want to play you gotta pay. still havent learned my lesson....... I have all three systems Wii, 360 and Ps3, so Ill make my choice then..it really dosent matter-for what the Wii version lacks with Graphics, please please make it up with fun and addictive gameplay!!

lets See a Game Rating or two first- as many others have mentioned it probably dosent matter how bad this game is- Id just buy it for its nostalgic value alone man...

I love the look of this on the wii. It'll be like living out the old cartoon!

Different art direction probably because its the wii, and gives the wi version an original feel fro its counterparts. Looks cool and seems to be a possible buy, will have to wait for some ratings though.

i suspect that the cartoon like graphics are more to cater to the wiis lack of graphics power, than to little kids. any attempt to imitate ps3 quality graphics on a wii would be futile, and make them look bad, no matter how good they were.

Does it actually matter that the Wii version looks different to the PS3 and 360? Do people enjoy the Wii? Yes. Do people enjoy the 360? Yes. Do people enjoy the PS3? Yes. I have all 3 and enjoy the consoles for different reasons. I think the constant X is better than Y which is more fun than Z argument seems to come from a very immature perspective and will always exist sadly. I hope people don't mind if I quantify by saying that I think a lot of the more mature gamers here are mature in both years and mental approach and have seen this argument time and time again and can now look beyond it. Enjoy whichever console you chose to buy. Don't take it personally if someone else chose to buy a different one and actually enjoys a different console to you! I personally use my PS3 most (Blu-Ray and games), Wii second and the 360 last.

The only good thing about console competition is that it pushes each company to strive for better technology, whether its control methods, visuals or gaming mechanics (which to be honest are borne from developers minds). The irony that each company ends up with an idea borrowed from another is just entertaining.

Wii borne Miis first and the others followed suit.
PS gave us the Eye and Singstar for MS to produce their own.
MS gave us an exemplary Live/DLC service which is now a must for any new machine produced.

So go, buy your console or consoles (if you can) and enjoy them for what they are. Gaming is fun, and just because a machine has more limited graphics capabilities, it doesn't mean to say its less fun. Lets be honest, fun and looks never always tally up! Take a look at some of my ex girlfriends to see that!

Could not agree more with you man.
I own several consoles also including psp, ds and decent pc.
There`s nothing like gameplay on Wii, it`s just unique.

And i have 7 year old girl, nothing else exists for her exept DS and WII.

tu2pac i respect all comments and opinions so please respect mine - the wii is by far the biggest selling current generation console
    fact - period!

it outsells both ps3 and xbox 360 put together WORLDWIDE

    in america sony is huge
in europe (especially england) 360 is huge

these boxes are good for hardcore gamers - we are lucky - 1)my son owns a 360 cos he is 14 and hardcore gamer
2)i own an sli behemoth PC that blows consoles (in power) out
    3) we have a PS3 for blu ray under our 50" samsung plasma tv
    4) the most played (including the missus and daughters is WII )

    to quantify your gaming machine:

    i have owned : zx80,zx81,apple,oric,spectrum 48/128,vic20,c64, amstrad cpc464 (greenscreen), nes,snes,master system, megadrive(genesis) ,neo geo, 3d0,jaguar, ps1,2, amiga500,1200,4000,cdi,lynx,mega cd,cd32,n64,gamecube

respectability comes from the games you play and the software houses they come from - i.e. everyone will wait for a rockstar game - years ago we waited for rare games or the latest id software game - going further back we waited for the latest peter molyneaux or dave perry game or david braben game (look them up on wickipedia for confirmation of legends). we even used to buy games because music in game was created by legends such as rob hubbard.

the wii has the greatest legend of them all - shiguru myamoto the man who bought MARIO to our screens in arcades (originally in the donkey kong arcade machine) he also gave us ZELDA and STARFOX

THAT IS WHY YOU BUY NINTENDO - because it is the platform of legend and gaming pedigree - THAT IS RESPECTABLE GAMING

you dont buy wii because you are wanting 'REALISM' you buy it for fun - and social gaming with other people

microsoft and sony want there platforms to have success buy ploughing millions into it - just like chelsea 'buying' the premiership

BTW did you know that MS and Sony LOSE money on every machine JUST to get it into homes?

nintendo at one point were selling a 7-1 ratio over the other two AND making a profit on EVERY console sold!

besides i can buy almost every game on xbox for the pc and the graphics are better AND pc is cheaper

and no im not a a fanboy (check out 30 years of gaming machines i own or owned and the setup i have now) enjoy what you have because you will be telling your children you are sick of hearing -ps50 is better than xbox10000000
    cos you had
    360 vs ps3 ,

and we had - xbox vs ps2 , n64 vs ps1 , megadrive vs snes
atari jaguar vs cd32, atari st vs commodore amiga , spectrum vs c64, pc (over the years) vs all , 3do vs amiga500 , neo geo won all but no-one could afford it , psp vs ds, blah blah blah its geting boooooooorrrriiiiing! im guessing your quite young (your nickname being some kind of tupac thing) so please try not to be swayed by 'realism' ... one day its all gonna get so real looking that you wont want to play it... its about escapism and realism is not escapism

ask yourself something - when was a brand new genre in gaming created ?

Wow ... I feel sorry for Wii owners ... check out how this game will look an a real platform (PS3 or 360). Please ... please go and buy a respectable gaming machine.

If that's not enough to convince you, find the list of upcoming games for the Wii this year.

I don´t think that they will screw up the Wii version because i think the Wii probably has a bigger market for this licence and they probably know that and therefore are not making a stupid port.
I don´t mind the cartoony characters with this game as long as the game is just as deep and challenging.
