decent gameplay, solid storyline, good sound and graphics. Innate PSP control handicap and lack of depth hold it back.

so i saw this on the used rack at Eb Games last month, and i can't really understand why. As the first PSP FPS, this thing got it right in so many more ways than everything i'd heard gives it credit for. X Play referenced it as a joke; I'd heard terrible, terrible things about the controls- Gamespot gave it a meh out of ten, and so did everything else. But I had watched Stand Alone Complex the previous night at 3AM, and at less than ten dollars i couldn't find a good reason not to buy. The next day i woke up and went to play one of the other purchases, Marc Ecko's Getting Up. that kept me involved all day until i finally was physically removed from my XBOX by the offer of going out to get dinner. On the way out, what else was there to do but grab my PSP and new game? As i popped it in i suddenly got that feeling i get when i buy something i've convinced myself is better than it really is.. say, Zone of the Enders : Fist of mars, or Robopon, or Tokobot... but the feeling was unfounded. Breezing through the main menu (rather mundane menu.. nice bg music though) i hit up the single player and immediately found myself in a full-blown cutscene. "Wow", i said to myself, "betcha this lasts 10 minutes and is the only one in the game." I was wrong- it lasted maybe 1 and a half minutes and was the same thing for every chapter and some new levels. I was impressed that the whole thing was voiced by the same actors, and was very faithful to the series in it's plot and gameplay. My only qualm was that the voice was a split-second behind the animation.. so i tabbed out to set my processor speed to 333 and noted the marked improvement. The localization is nearly flawless. No "They are get away car android inside!" here. Now then- the meaty goodness of FPS gameplay.. wait, no. first i have a.. mission select screen? You mean this game has relatively open-ended plot advancement, and i can not only set up my characters but i have a robot tag-team buddy who i can RIDE INSIDE ?! ZOMG. the level of customization kind of blew me away at first. It reminded me of Mech Warrior / Mech Commander. i love the mech games, and configuring a tachikoma just had me geeking out for a bit. unfortunately, the repair / booster / heat sink ( ZOMG HEAT SINKS ) packs don't appear to do anything. the ammo pack .. might? not sure. However... i had a good time fitting all the tachikoma out to match their personality and range specs. Agressive tachikoma + dual wield SMG's or Shotguns is winnar. The character stuff works just as well. Who else gave the major a SAW, missle launcher, and grenade launcher? well actually, i gave everyone a SAW... which leads us to the problem.
what problem? THE problem. Controls. everyone had a SAW not because of it's ammo, firepower, or range, but because of it's spray and pray capability. Aiming is something of fantasy for these poor section 9 members.. they can only overshoot wildly in each direction and dream and hope of the day they actually hit the target. well, it isn't quite that bad. I didn't realize until just now that the down button was lock-on >_> and i've been doing just fine. Granted, i've been shunning the sniper rifle and toting a SAW for the entire game, but i have little trouble lining up shots with assault rifles and the like. pistols... that's another story. They just.. aren't worth carrying.. Which is a shame, considering how many of them you get. i would've liked to see some more weapon variety, rather than shiny wood versions of all the pistols. the tachikoma's had some fun stuff.. pulse guns, ion cannons, anti-material rifles... not to mention the endless assortment of missle, rocket, and grenade launchers. maybe some stand-and-fire stuff could've been added, like a mortar or heavy machine gun. still, what's there is pretty good. i like the FNP-90 look-alike assault rifles you start with a lot. :] The sound is fine, by my standards. gunshots sound real and work in stereo, the steady acid trance in the background is perfect. Graphics too. The character models look pretty darn close to the anime, and the sheer number of different surroundings you go through in through is pretty astounding. train stations? yeah, there's more than one level involving them, but they ALL LOOK DIFFERENT. the urban sprawl looks different each time, too. The docks look nothing like the auto-repair facility- it's hard to spot re-used sprites, if at all. Frequent health pickups make the game fairly easy, though you'll have to double back sometimes to fin them (or just to progress in the story). objectives are a somewhat bleh part of the game. They are often rather vague to begin with, and are predictably mundane. when you're told to "find object X in container Y", you can bet there's fourteen Y's and X won't show up till you've hit 13 of them. However, the plot is always fascinating and driving enough to keep you going. Unlockable parts and other things keep you coming back to replay the levels as all characters. Find the "stun the maid android" mission too easy? go back and try to beat it with only a pistol and sniper rifle. Overall, the game is underrated. For a pioneer game on the system, it packs a very good story and gameplay that, while frustrating sometimes due to controls, is easy enough to master. it's a not-quite-complete package, but is definitely worth a rent, at least.
