More of the same old Kratos, and that's a good thing!

GAMEPLAY - Not a significant change from the original, most people will tend to stick with the chained blades for attacks. New additions include a spear and a gigantic hammer, which can be fun for variety but nothing is as fun as slicing and dicing with those original blades! Still a combination of button mashing mixed in with an occasional button sequence for finishing moves or boss battles. Personally I didn't feel that there needed to be a change in the combat, as the original was superb, and I'm glad it stayed the same. I'm happy to say that the platforming elements have been improved. Some of the platforming from the original was extremely frustrating for me, since I'm not the greatest when it comes to that. While there were a few challenges, there was nothing I couldn't overcome after a few attempts. A new addition is the use of grapple hooks, which is fun and easy to learn. There were also a couple of flying sequences, but these were completely linear and you'll pretty much be focusing on fighting as opposed to the flying. Still, a nice addition. Puzzles again play a large role in the game as Kratos moves items around in order to proceed to the next level, but for the most part they made sense and were not too difficult to figure out.
GRAPHICS - I was amazed at the graphical quality in the first GOW and it happened again in the second! The graphics of both the characters and the environments put just about all other PS2 games to shame. An unbelievable amount of detail went into truly massive areas as well as into the monsters and of course Kratos himself. Some cut scenes used the in game engine, which was very nice, and others used CGI which were the closest I've seen to looking like real life on the PS2. I can't imagine how much work must have gone into this, but you'll have to see it to believe it!
SOUND - Another area that was perfect. As with the first GOW, the background music was terrific. It sounded completely appropriate for the setting and I never got tired of hearing it. Definitely want to buy this soundtrack. The voices also continue to be top of the line, with Kratos, the Gods and the Titans having movie quality speech. Sound effects were great, whether it was the clash of weapons or the tearing apart of monsters!
VALUE - This game took approximately 16 hours for me to complete. This can be a touchy issue with gamers, as many have different opinions as to how long a game should be. Most people do agree that a non-stop action game like this is simply not going to be as long as say a RPG or a game that might have stealth or other time consuming elements. Personally I felt that the total time was satisfactory. Sure, I would have liked it to be longer because I didn't want it to stop, but I wouldn't have wanted it to just be just filler, I feel that the pace was just right. At the game's completion you are given the opportunity to play at more difficult levels, obtain extra costumes, play bonus games, watch all of the cut scenes (one of my favorites) etc. However, this time they actually included an extra DVD full of more bonus material - lost levels, monster creation, interviews with the developers etc. They spared no expense in making this game and in giving you just about anything you could want. A great value!
SUMMARY - As I've pointed out, this game is very similar to the first GOW. If you really didn't care much for the first then this one is probably not going to change your mind. However, if you enjoyed the first then I think you will enjoy this one even more. They improved the few areas that needed a little refinement from the first game to give you a near perfect gaming experience. Sure, you won't have that same feeling you did the first time you stepped in Kratos' sandals, but the story this time becomes more epic and you'll meet many fascinating people from Greek mythology. As with the first, this is rated "M" for extreme violence (mostly on monsters, but occasionally on people) and a couple of nude scenes tossed in as well. If you are a fan of the first GOW or of action/adventure games I can't recommend this game enough!
