The Games
If you're shopping for younger players and concerned about inappropriate content, keep an eye out for ratings on the game, which come from the ESRB in the US, the PEGI in Europe, and the OFLC in Australia. Each regulatory body has ratings for content in each rated game. For instance, the ESRB uses the following ratings:
- EC
- Early Childhood: For Persons 3 and Older
- E
- Everyone: For Persons 6 and Older
- E10+
- Everyone 10+: For Persons 10 and Older
- T
- Teen: For Persons 13 and Older
- M
- Mature: For Persons 17 and Older
- AO
- Adults Only: For Persons 18 and Older
Most rated games will also have labeled descriptors that explain why those games got that particular rating, such as "graphic violence" or "explicit language." If you are shopping for younger game fans, we recommend you familiarize yourself with the ratings system for your territory and shop accordingly.
Now, let's get to the games!
New Games
We Recommend: A starter list of new PlayStation 3 games: Assassin's Creed II, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Demon's Souls, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, God of War III, Heavy Rain, The Beatles: Rock Band, FIFA Soccer 11, Red Dead Redemption.
Here's Why: The PlayStation 3 has a very solid library of great games, including third-person action games, such as God of War III, plus great racing, sports, music, and role-playing games from both the US and Japan. We've compiled a list above of some the best new games available--roll your mouse cursor over each game title to view a screenshot or just click on the game title to get more information on that game, including a full GameSpot review.
Older Games
We Recommend: A starter list of oldie-but-goodie PlayStation 3 games: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Grand Theft Auto IV, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space, Burnout Paradise, BioShock.
Here's Why: There are some excellent new games out there, but there are also some outstanding classic PS3 games that you can find at markdown prices. Use the list of games featured above to get you a headstart on your bargain-bin PS3 treasure hunting by rolling your mouse cursor over each game title to view a screenshot, or just click on the game title to get more information on that game, including a full GameSpot review.
Downloadable Games - PlayStation Network
We Recommend: A starter list of PlayStation Network games: Comet Crash, ZEN Pinball, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Mega Man 9, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Shatter, Flower, Battlefield 1943, Braid, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, Joe Danger.
Here's Why: The PlayStation Network is also home to many good downloadable games. These games may not necessarily have the hugely long gameplay you might find in PS3 games on store shelves, but many of them are still very enjoyable. You'll find challenging puzzle and strategy games, as well as multiplayer fighter and shooter games here, among others. Pick up a PlayStation Network card to make sure you have enough credit in your online account to grab all the downloadable games you want.
