User Rating: 8.7 | Genji: Dawn of the Samurai PS2
Genji Dawn of the Samurai's main characters are Yoshi*sune and Benkei.(Another cool character is Lady Shi*uka.) A group of samurai's known as the Heishi are the most powerful samurai's around due to the stones called the Amahagane. Kiyomori Taira' the leader of the Heishi clan' has many of the Amahagne. Kiyomori defeated the leader of the Genji which was Yoshi*sune's father and now Yoshi*sune must fill his father's footsteps. Kiyomori also has a partner known as Kageyiko who is very powerful and he brings him more Amahagane. Will the lightning quick Yoshi*sune and the headstrong Benkei be able to bring peace back to Japan?

Genji's storyline will interest anyone who likes Japan or Samurais. The characters are pretty awesome. Anyone who likes samurais should give this game a try. In Genji you will battle the Heishi and evil creatures. The gameplay is mostly hack and slash but the battle system can be both quick and fun. You can switch between Yoshi*sune and Benkei throughout the game. Both have their own strengths and weaknesses. If you are Yoshi*sune then you will have alot of quick but not so powerful attacks. Yoshi*sune fights with 2 Katanas at once. One of those attacks are when you your blade a few times and also some kicks adding up to about a six hit combo. He also has his quick lunge attack. When Yoshi*sune jumps in the air he can perform an attack that allows him to strike from the air by homing on an enemy with his foot or he can just jump in the air and strike the enemy with a combo that strikes 3 times. 2 of those attacks strike in the air and the last one is a slam attack from the air. Yoshi*sune can jump on rooftops. If you are Benkei you will have slow but powerful strikes. Benkei has a warclub and a fauchard but he does not fight with both at once. Benkei can swing his warclub in a 3 hit combo which can be charged up. Benkei also has a charge up attack that allows him to spin around and hit the enemies multiple times. With the warclub' Bankei has 2 types of jump and slam attacks. Benkei can use his fauchard to slam multiple enemies multiple times and it is quicker than his other weapon. The boss battles are really unique and fun.

A really cool move in this game is the Kamui. Kamui can be used when at least one of your blue bars are filled up. Though you start with one bar' you eventually get up to 4 bars. What Kamui power does is that when activated it slows down time. When an enemy or in alot of cases enemies' attack you you will be able to dodge their attacks easily and when they are close enough then the square button will pop up on the screen so then you push it and your character dodges in a cool way and kills them. Sometimes when using the Amahagne power your character might kick a ball of energy back at your opponent' jump over them and stab them in the back' dodging and slicing them in half' and other ways. If this is done on a boss they are just hurt by this ability most of the time but it usually deals alot of damage to them. If you have a enough bars you can slow down time even more. The screen will change colors when this happens and this ability is more powerful then the ordinary Kamui power. If you kill enough enemies quickly enough then you will get a rating on how well you did. Sometimes this power doesn't need to be activated for it to take effect.

As you play through this game you will be able to increase your abilities which are health' attack' and defense. You power these stats up when you have essence of amahagne pieces. Every 3 Amahagane piece put into a certain stat levels that stat up.

In addition to your already starting items you can buy more weapons' armor and all kinds of supplies. Some items can be very useful such as the Amulet of Ressurrection which brings you back to life when you die. You can also hold healing items and items that protect you from certain things. You can make your own weapon if you have the right materials.

When it comes to graphics Genji looks great especially in the cutscenes. The level desighns were done well and so were the cutscenes which look very realistic. The levels are colorful and the designs were done well.

Genji sounds awesome. The yells of your character and enemies are awesome and the slashing sounds sound nice. It has a very well thought up Japanese soundtrack. The japanese voice acting is awesome. All of the talk is in japanese but it is translated into english at the bottom of the screen. The japanese ending music to the game matches the game well.

Genji seems like it is more like a rental then a game to buy to most people all because it is short but you will most likely be satisfied with what you have played through out the game. There are some unlockables and you might want to play the game over to play as one character more than the other but It is still a short game. There is a continue mode after you beat the game which might make the game fun last longer.

Genji is more of a rental than a buy to most. The storyline and characters are pretty good and it will keep you wanting more. I still think it is worth a buy but most will find it a pretty short game. If you like to play samurai action games with just the main mode over and over again or if you like samurai's' than this is the game for you. Very awesome hack and slash game with very awesome storyline and characters.
