Once you get past the shock of the out dated graphics and sound, you’ll find that a good role playing game is here. If we were to roll back the date to the late 80s, the graphics would be considered decent. But by today’s standards, they are very outdated. This upshot to this is that it does give the game an old-school kind of feel. The quality of the graphics and sound is most likely a reflection of the fact that this is an effort from a very small team which presumably does not have a large production and art budget. Even though it is said a player is not supposed to let these things get in the way of good game play, for this player, graphics and sound do make a difference and add or subtract from the atmosphere. This is a good role playing game with an addicting combat system and advancement system. It uses the old paradigm of ‘clearing’ an area which gives unfettered access to other areas. The game play mechanics are sound and the balance of the game feels very solid and well thought out. Geneforge also excels in presenting a compelling story line with many options to choose alliances. This has one of the better stories of an RPG of late. It offers a lot of different endings depending on the choices you make. The story is fresh and modern and, as a plus, doesn’t involve elves, dwarves, orcs or goblins. The game is filled with quests and the play style is generally non-linear. If you are looking for solid RPG game play and excellent story telling, I would recommend this game.
