Interesting at first, but then becomes a slog.

An interesting take on Koei's part, making a strategy country-management type game with a fantasy twist. That being said, the game is lacking. I first played this game when it initially came out. I rented the game and played the heck out of it. I then played it a decade or more later on an emulator, mainly for a nostalgia kick. This game is fairly simple, as Koei's stuff goes. You'll blow a lot of time building up your little countries and going to war, using the same units over and over, all the while searching for additional gems.

If anybody is even remotely interested in this style of game, check out the stunning, for its time, Nobunaga's Ambition for the NES or any of the myriad Romance of the Three Kingdoms. They offer more depth and are way more challenging, especially if you get other people to play along.
