Gears of War Hands-On - New PC Content

We check out all-new campaign and multiplayer content from the upcoming PC version of Epic's popular Xbox 360 shooter.

Earlier today, while attending a Microsoft press event in London's Covent Garden, we had an opportunity to spend some time with a demo version of Gears of War on the PC. As has been well documented previously, the upcoming PC version will feature content not found in the Xbox 360 version (at least not yet), including five new campaign chapters, three new multiplayer maps, and a new game type. Of course, the PC game will also support higher screen resolutions than its Xbox 360 counterpart and looked great running at 1920x1080 (1920x1200 will purportedly be the maximum) on large HDTV screens.

After opting for an Xbox 360 controller rather than a mouse and keyboard setup, we spent a short time playing through Gears of War's first chapter. This afforded us an opportunity to check out the PC game's visuals in a level that we're already familiar with, and although the improvements weren't mind-blowing, we certainly weren't disappointed. Your COG soldiers and their Locust enemies appear to benefit from the game's PC makeover a little more than the locales in which they do battle do. Their highly detailed faces and armor also hold up to even the closest scrutiny.

With the first chapter behind us, we jumped straight into Gears of War's fifth and final act. This kicks off with five new chapters that bridge a gap between the end of the Xbox 360 game's fourth act and what was originally the beginning of the fifth. Without wishing to give too much away, the premise of the five new chapters appears to be that your squad is en route to a train station and is being chased by a gigantic "brumak" locust creature. In the Xbox 360 game, the brumak appears only in cinematics, but in the PC game, you'll get to fight one. The titles of the five new chapters, in the order that you'll play them, are as follows: Impasse, Comedy of Errors, Window Shopping, Powers that Be, and Jurassic Proportions. No prizes for guessing which of those will pit you against the 40-foot-tall killing machine. Impasse was the only new chapter that we got to play on this occasion, though.

Racing toward the train station in its APC, the COG squad comes to a screeching halt when confronted by a raised drawbridge. The controls for the bridge are nearby, but after activating them, it quickly becomes clear that the bridge's power is out and that this is certainly a trap. Locust grunts scale the side of the bridge and waste no time calling for reinforcements once the battle starts going your way. It took us several attempts to get past the sequence on the medium "hardcore" difficulty, after which, we were led down into a slumlike area beneath the bridge and tasked with bringing the power back online. Wretches crawling along the underside of the bridge from both directions posed a significant challenge, and before we were able to overcome it, we were asked to quit out of the game to take part in a multiplayer session.

The fact that we proceeded to play for well over an hour using the same gameplay mode on the same map over and over again, says a lot about Gears of War's great multiplayer content. The mode was King of the Hill, the map was Courtyard, and both are new. If you're familiar with the Xbox 360 version of Gears of War, King of the Hill is a lot like the Annex mode. The only real difference is that in the new mode you need to remain inside capture points to score off them, which actually makes the game very different. If none of that made any sense to you whatsoever, King of the Hill is a mode in which a small area of the map is designated as the "hill" and two teams attempt to occupy it. You score a point for every second or so that you outnumber the enemy inside the capture point, and the first team to score 120 points is the winner. Like the Annex mode, King of the Kill lets you respawn as many times as necessary before the end of the game, though you'll be taken out of action for up to 15 seconds each time you die.

When playing King of the Hill on the symmetrical Courtyard map, the capture point will be in one of four places. Each is a spawn point for one of the game's deadliest weapons, and each has little or no cover to hide behind. This makes things interesting right from the start because while getting into the scoring zone early certainly isn't a bad tactic, there's a lot to be said for visiting the other three weapon spawns and stocking up on hardware. Incidentally, the weapons in question are the "Longshot" sniper rifle, the powerful "Hammerburst" Locust assault rifle, the "Boomshot" grenade launcher, and the supersatisfying "Hammer of Dawn" laser designator with which you can call down death from above, courtesy of an orbital satellite. The courtyard itself is surrounded by tall buildings and, based on our experiences playing it, it's every bit as well designed as the multiplayer maps that have gone before it. There are tempting (though never truly safe) camping spots aplenty for wannabe snipers, there are crumbling walls or columns to take cover behind all over the place, and if you're badly injured, you'll rarely be too far away from an area that you can run into to recover your health if you're quick enough.

The only downside to the PC version of Gears of War, at least based our time with it, is that when playing multiplayer, you can't assume that everyone on your team has a microphone. None of us were armed with microphones, which resulted in battles that were quite disorganized. Of course, this won't be a problem for any of you fighting in organized clans and the like, but if you're playing pick-up games alongside random teammates, you might find that it's impossible to communicate with each other. Playing alongside or against a number of mouse and keyboard users, we were pleased to find that we had no problem being competitive. For the most part, we notched up some of the more impressive scores during our session. Of course, it remains to be seen whether or not playing with Xbox 360 controllers will still be a viable option after the game ships and all of you mouse and keyboard users become more proficient with the controls.

Gears of War is currently scheduled for release for the PC in November. We look forward to bringing you more information as soon as it becomes available.

Xbox360 is gaming console and is not made for game editing or modding but only for playing mods so you can best let the big boys do the work.. if you want something new then get a load of mails and email the producers they wil response if you all get the same question anyways feel free to invite me to the email and il be glad to join you 360 fans to email the producers

How many years have most of you complainers been playing games? How many expansion packs have you seen added to unfinished games just to get you to pay for the same game twice? And you still have the nerve to complain cause you went out and bought a "beta" copy cause you had to be uber and buy it first, and they release a finished version months later, when the real release date would have been? Maybe you should STOP BUYING THE GAMES THAT COME OUT LIKE THIS AND THEY WOULD HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO GIVE YOU A FINISHED PRODUCT IN THE FIRST PLACE INSTEAD OF PAYING TWICE FOR SUPPOSED EXTRAS

wtf epic, us on the 360 MADE this game what it is now, you better not turn your backs on us, make an expansion disc with this content for the 360, don't let us down

This is a pretty sweet game, though the initial chapters are getting pretty repetitive and the horrible checkpoint save system is a holdover from the console side of things. People who make arbitrarily crappy save checkpoints that are spaced too far apart should be kicked in the crotch. Let me save where I want or else break up your checkpoints better, Epic. Other than that lame-ness, it's a solid shooter, even compared to all the great stuff already on the PC. I'd give it about an 8.5. Very good but not totally great - mainly because of the crummy save system.

Thia game won't even tickle my 8800. UT3 runs smooth as butter, those who think the textures in Gears of War are evidence that the 360 is powerful are silly.

I think I'll trade in my 360 version for this PC version. Looks much better.

This is another reason why its such a good time to be a PC gamer. We have it all, the best graphics, sound, controllers and games, not to mention all the other thing we can do with our PC. I probably won't buy this game though as there are better games for the PC out now and in the next few months.

Yes, lets NOT test the input device, but stick with the old one, previously tested... smart move gamespot. I'm going to be happy with this game, as long as they improve the responsiveness of the controls, and drop the autoaim. Unlike Xbox controllers, PC gamers need perfect, "intertia-free" control, where Xbox needs more "fluid" moves. Most ports don't seem to get that, which makes them horrible to play.

"...opting for an Xbox 360 controller rather than a mouse and keyboard..." -What!? keyboard/mouse is what you want to be testing as it is a new feature coming with the vista version. Not to mention just better than a gamepad for shooters. "Gears of War is currently scheduled for release for the PC..." -this game isn't coming out on PC, its coming out on Microsoft's new soft-console "Vista" I was initially looking forward to playing co-op gears on PC, but I'm part of the tiny niche majority that is XP owners.

I have no reason to own a 360 anymore, not even halo3 is worth it for me. So I'm selling mine, 2 controllers 1 black 1 white, wireless adapter, all premium specs with protection plan 1 year free exchange no questions asked at bestbuy. Perfect condition, I've only played GoW occasionally because I suck at it. Even all the plastic bags are still here. just bought it in June, only created 1 Live account. selling it now, email me at ldavidtw2000@gmail.com if you want one for Halo3 or something.

Sorry about this being nothing much to do with the text above, but i'm a 360 and pc owner i usually go on the 360 forums and videos and theres always complaining between the 360 and the ps3 owners, and never much to do about the game thats being talked about, but on these pc comments the actually have something to do with whats going on, so really what i'm saying is i enjoy reading your comments, you guys are awesome.

I see a trend. Hype up a game, set a release date, then say close to release date "game is delayed" and that they want to make sure that their company releases a great product, we complain, then someone says "its for the better", then the game releases the day after we lost interest.......... Then of course we go buy it.

First off, Luieburger, you are a douche. Second off, I don't know if I can tell you how pissed off I am (of course in the spirit of Jealousy) that the PC version Get's so much new content. I mean really, we bought it first and this is almost a punishment. Don;t get me wrong it's not like PC people don't deserve this game, anyone does (except for elitist wankers like burger, who have some crap "holier than thou" attitude) I actually think the opposite, I think 360 owners just deserve to recieve the same thing, I mean honestly Cliffy B got fat off of OUR money first, so give me a damn brumak fight. seriously.

Anyone remember a slip up about this on the PC ages back? Windows published a 'games for windows' add just after the XBOX version was realesed. The advert was a cabinet/shelf thingy like in a games shop full of game cases with 'games for windows' over the top of them... and right there on the 2nd shelf was Gears Of War...for PC :)

aparrently the new content isnt possible with the version of the unreal engine GoW 360 was made with - You cant just tack on the xtra as downloadable content. Also I think this is due to the hardware limitations of the xbox as well. Thats what Bill said and i'll believe him. They could port the pc content over to 360, as a small standalone expansion, but it wouldnt be an option as downloadable content. Different engine.

Go away Microsoft. We of the PC do not desire your inferior FPS trash on our system. We of the gaming elite do not approve of your rubbish which includes stealing the Halo series from Mac and PC and producing PC versions only as an afterthought to your beloved Xbox system. The mere fact that you even make games for the PC anymore is an insult, as the last GOOD Microsoft game was Age of Empires 2. You should bow down and thank your lucky stars that the people at Valve, GODS of FPS, have been merciful enough to give you the Orange Box this fall.

" think Epic just realised they were in danger of alienating the PC market. Just as well really, seeing as WE made them who they are today " "I hope the 360 does NOT get the new content. They got their Gears a year ago, and PC gamers have been waiting patiently for this. We should get something in compensation for waiting an extra year." both of you are idiots, first they diddnt forget about you, it was always intended to be brought to the pc, second, pc users your compensation is that you get UT4 first (along with the ps3) which is complete **** if the 360 doesnt get this content im gonna be pissed

Is it just me or is Gears a little overrated. It takes 30+ rounds in the head to kill anyone. Plus, the online is plagued with lag kills and shotguns. Shotguns are so unrealistic. I can shoot some one's foot and their head pops, "Like a big zit!"

Even the preview reviewer is doubtful that a controller can compete with the keyboard and mouse crowd. If only the console makers would just natively support a mouse device. Only FPS with a huge sweet spot, slower/dumber AI or some sort of auto aim are playable on a console. That cheapens the experience. I remember trying to play MOH on the PS2 with a controller one day, and walked away in disgust. I had to stop to take aim and continued to miss as the controller overshot the target. Playing the same game on a PC I never had to stop to land a shot. At that point a keyboard and mouse is the only way I'll ever play a FPS.
