If you thought Gears of War looked good on the Xbox 360, then wait until you see it on the PC.
As good as Gears of War looked on the Xbox 360 (and it looked great), it's got nothing on what it looks like on a high-end PC. That's the first thing that struck us as we got to see and play the upcoming PC version of last year's blockbuster Xbox 360 shooter. This new PC version, which was introduced at Microsoft's E3 press conference on Tuesday, will feature exclusive new chapters and features. While we didn't get to see those, we did get to engage in a three-on-three multiplayer battle with assault rifles with chainsaw bayonets, and it was glorious.
Sure, the Xbox 360 version of the game can run in high-definition, but that's still a lower resolution than what we played at on the PC. The PC version can also benefit from the superior antialiasing technology in the latest video cards, resulting in a much smoother, sharper, and crisper image. The result is a game that looks better than ever on the PC's hardware.
Surprisingly, the controls for the game translate easily from the Xbox 360's gamepad to the PC. The space bar is the context sensitive key that you'll use the most. If you're standing next to cover, holding down the space bar will cause your character to "hug" that cover for protection against incoming fire. While the space bar is held, you can hold down the right mouse button to "pop up" or "pop out" beyond that cover to take a shot at the enemy. Releasing the right mouse button causes you to return to shelter. If you're not near cover, holding down the space bar will cause you to "roadie run," which makes your character crouch and run. This is useful if you're getting shot at and you need to make a dash for the nearest cover.
That system pretty much defines the combat mechanic in the game, as you're constantly using cover to close with and destroy the enemy. At your disposal are a variety of sci-fi weaponry, like bulky assault rifles and shotguns, though we didn't get to play with the really cool stuff that's in the game, like the torque bow that fires exploding arrows. We did see the Hammer of Dawn in action, though. This cool weapon doesn't fire anything. Instead, it designates a target in the open, and as long as there's a Hammer of Dawn satellite overhead, an intense laser bolt comes down from the heavens and incinerates the target.
By far the most fun, however, are the grisly killing moves that you can make. If you use your chainsaw bayonet and get close to someone, you can saw him in half and the gore splatters the camera. It's such a hilariously over-the-top moment that you can't help but giggle at. At least, we couldn't help but giggle. Then there are the curb stomps. If you're killed in Gears of War, most of the time your body will fall to the ground. So long as you weren't sawed in half by a chainsaw or similarly destroyed, a teammate can run up and revive you. One way to prevent that from happening, though, is if you see someone on the ground and finish him off. Curb stomps are fun as you put your armored boot on your victim's head and then, well, stomp down. Let's take this moment to remind you that Gears of War is a Mature-rated game.
All of these games are made on PCs to begin with, so it's only natural that they end up on a PC anyway. They make to games to cutting edge PC specs, then dumb down the textures, lighting, AA, etc. to fit the console porting. If XBOX 360 games keep popping up I'll probably just buy a PS3.
Can't WAIT!!!!! :D Seems like Unreal 3 Engine is on top these days....and for the x360 gamers ....BUY A PC!!! Consoles are for .... ahhh never mind :P
I feel sorry for XBox 360 gamers who might have bought their console for games like Halo and Gears of War, which seemed to be exclusive but are now showing up on the PC...but its great for me, seeing as i have a PC and PS3, no 360
wow, sure thing the controllers would be much easier in this pc version than in the 360. but i gotta have a really nice vid card to run it smoothly like the console does but o well. i got the console, im sticking w that version :)
looks great, cant wait for this. Well I heard that gears will be coming out with some more downloadable content when halo comes out.
Sorry no extra contnt for Xbox 360. When asked about bringing the additional content to the Xbox 360 version, Mark Rein of Epic Games stated that "it is unlikely we will bring that content to 360". He then states, "Unfortunately the [PC version]'s built on is not really compatible with the 360 and so it would involve a massive patch, a patch larger than all five we've done so far, to Gears of War to do that." Additionally, the PC and Xbox 360 versions will not allow for cross-platform play; Cliff Bleszinski stated that "while this feature does add value, it just wasn't that desired nor worth the extra months of design and development time. We want Gears of War to be out this holiday on PC."[
wow when i saw this on tv i thought damn...its gonna be vista and DX10 only but nope! oh im so happy..note to self, get out more..but does anyone know how good a graphics card u would need? ive just got a raddy x1950 pro...and on a final note HA in your face 360 owners! not that i have got anything against 360 owners..
you can have a 360 controller for your pc so its the same thing other than online gaming. i dont think well be able to play our xbox live coherts.
yeah i was watching the microsoft pressconference, cuz i missed E3 (not my fault, its really not easy when you dont have your own pc and internet connection to work with...i was stuck with 30 kb/s at my uncle's house for TWO WEEKS) anyway as i was watching it, they we're like "yeah, we're bringing gears of war to pc" and i was like... HOLY SH¡T (yeah those were my exacy words :)) excelent, gr8 news for me!
Don't forget the 360 controller is fully compatible on the PC (works great for Lost Planet). As long as the price is significantly cheaper than the 360 version which I already have, I'll consider buying this.
lol. Chainsaw Bayonet/Curb Stomp FTW I own Gears for the 360 and I really enjoyed it, but i can't picture myself playing it on the pc. Holding down the spacebar for context-sensitive moves and right mouse for poking out of cover? sounds too alien to me. Hopefully they make the new chapters Downloadable Content for the 360 because i Reaaaallly wanted to fight that big boss thing (instead i got a cutscene of me driving away from it, crying). Oh and please make it free, M$. ....please?
"Willy105 I still think the game is an insult to the game industry. Because it relies on it's blood and gore. Whatever happened to games being mature enough to not care how dark they looked?" I think you're an insult to gamers with this comment.
I still think the game is an insult to the game industry. Because it relies on it's blood and gore. Whatever happened to games being mature enough to not care how dark they looked?
wow I didnt know they would release gears on PC my friend just bought 360 for GoW, man he is gonna be pissed!
hope they put an update on 360 to match new content on pc. hopefully they wont pull another "hidden front" and make us pay.
That new boss is awesome as hell, i just say the gamehead preview of the mokap for it, daaammn they use a full size mechanical monster fot ir those guys at epic are some of the best, and reaaally thanks to em for giving us the pc gears of war with even MORE stuff.PC GAMING RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pc vs Xbox 360 ???. sence when ?. its still microsoft people. lol damn people made it seem like its coming to the ps3
HOLY SH%$! The pc looks awsome. i'm started to wish i had a high-end pc! Oh well. I just hope they sell they new five missions on xbox live for the 360 version. the 360 version was fun as hell to play but felt like a short game.
ill have to take gamepots word that the pc version really does look better than the x360 version. lol this was one of the games that made me consider buyin a x360. haa haa so much for those who said pc gaming was dead.
Finally it's coming to PC! The only better thing that could happen for it now would be for it to go to PS3 lol. But the fact that it's even better on PC is awesome.
nice nice this is what im looking for and just in time Im upgrading to a huge ass gaming rig in about a month and a half, I'll be able to run this game with better graphics then a PS3
Not surprised at all, just a little disappointed. I'm not usually one for "Exclusive" titles, but I was proud that only the 360 had this fine exaple of gaming greatness. Oh well...
Yeah Finally Gears of War for the pc, ive been waiting to see these official news since i bought my new pc this month. Also it confirmed all that i;ve been thinking lately, most of microsoft xbox exclusive titles are going to be available for the pc, i wouldnt be surprised when i see halo 3 for the pc later.
So at first they made this game exclusive to 360 and now they just port it over to pc? Obviously they don't take the word 'exclusive' seriously.
I can't wait in till this content comes out for the 360. And yes it going to have too.Because they said that the PC owners will be able to play with the 360 owners in co-op and multiplayer. So they will have too. It going to be so fun to play with the PC owners in co-op and muiltiplayer.
This Extra Content with the PC version is not going to be ported to the 360. There was a short interview with mark rein and cliffy b. (only a couple questions) and cliffy responded to this question by asking one of his own, " If the Extra Conent were to be ported to the 360 then would people find any sense on buying the PC Version which is identical to the 360 version?" (Not exact words but along the lines of what he said) Sorry to the 360 people but you cant always have everything, think of it this way you may receive new maps we dont get and thats not fair, but thats how it turns out. You get what you get and you should be happy with what you get. In order for them to port over all the extra goodies included with the PC Version the game would have to be reworked not patched which is all you will get. This is how I interpret gamers these days, fanboys receive a game for there console and think there the one's who brought it to the success it is today. Unfortunatly people have to be that stuck-up in that way. This is the case for all faboys. Please Xbox360 owners get over it you will most likely get your exclusive content someday, so dont turn into an a**hole fanboy cause your pi**ed off. Also the price for the PC Version is $60 too with all the extra content included for people whao want to know. $10 more than a standard price of a PC game. Another important thing people have been drooling over, there is no cross-platform gameplay for PC to X360. Sorry (Search the web if you dont believe me)
I guess I better get more MS points for the 360 because I really doubt Microsoft would miss the chance to make us may $10.
You bought the 360 and the game. Microsoft got money. They're happy now, they don't care. They might let 360 owners d/l it for a fee.
