Epic took their near-perfect shooter and found a way to make it better!

User Rating: 9.5 | Gears of War 2 X360
Already settled itself as one of the biggest franchises on the 360, Gears of War finally returns to continue the fight between humanity and the Locust Horde. I was a big fan of the first GOW and played it in both singleplayer and splitscreen coop mode. After recently upgrading to a Gold Live account I had the pleasure of playing GOW2 in online coop mode. Here are my impressions.

GAMEPLAY (9.5) - As with just about every other factor, the gameplay in GOW2 is an even better version of the original. Original standbys such as the roadie run, chainsaw melees, executions, and active reloads are back but now there are also duelling chainsaws, using downed opponents as 'meat shields' and Locust boomshields which can also get planted into the ground, creating portable cover positions. There's also a lengthy list of executions that can be performed based on the weapon you're using. Speaking of weapons there are some new additions such as the flamethrower and a gatling gun known as the mulcher that will shred multiple enemies, plus the mortar for devastating long range attacks. GOW2 also features numerous driving sequences, which while overall are not quite as fun as the basic running and gunning, do provide some variety as well as some memorable set pieces. Still, when it's all said and done, the running to cover and shooting gameplay of this franchise is second to none, especially playing with a friend that works with you to outflank your enemies.

GRAPHICS (9.5) - GOW2 simply looks amazing. As great as the original Gears looked Epic somehow went to a higher level, and I can't imagine the 360 being able to go beyond this. The characters are detailed to the point of almost photo-realism, and their natural movements add to the effect. There are many more open environments this time around, with settings that make you stop and just look around in awe, wondering how they were able to pull this off.

AUDIO (9.0) - As in the first game the voice acting remains top notch, and with an improved story there are more opportunities to hear some great conversations. The great background music adds to the immersion of being in an epic adventure, and the sound effects from the weapons and explosions will give anyone's speakers a major workout.

VALUE (9.0) - I'm estimating it took somewhere in the 10 to 12 hour mark to complete the story, a little better than average for the typical shooter. Of course Gears adds much more to the value with all of its multiplayer modes. As i mentioned at the start I played this game in online coop mode, which worked perfectly, and as fun as it would be to simply play the game alone there's no question that playing with a partner adds a lot to the experience. I have not yet tried out the multiplayer modes but needles to say there are many different types available, and there's certainly plenty of people out there playing them.

SUMMARY - If you are one of the few that never played the original I wouldn't say it's necessary before playing this but it would be recommended simply to make the story more meaningful for you. Speaking of story this is yet another area where Epic improved on the original. While this may not be a concern to players who just want to dive into the action, the story gives you a much stronger sense of purpose and pulls you deeper into the experience, making you feel as if you're really fighting for something rather than simply trying to reach the next level. Being a fan of RPGs and adventure games I can appreciate it when a developer tries to create an interesting story, and Epic certainly succeeded. It's really a no-brainer, if you love shooters then Gears of War 2 is a must buy, highly recommended.
