How can i compete in the sand arena?

when i tried to compete it will say "Huh? You wanna join the battle?" "Hmmm, we can start soon> But you don't look competent

You've got to do a story scene before it will let you compete. There is a ruin near where you return from the past; complete the ruin to advance the story.
