E3 06: Final Fantasy VI Advance Preshow Report

Square Enix is bringing Terra, Shadow, Locke, Kefka, and the whole gang to the Game Boy Advance, and we have the first details in our E3 2006 preshow report.

With the recent announcement of Final Fantasy VI, the trinity of SNES Final Fantasy games is finally complete on the Game Boy Advance. Just as with Final Fantasy IV Advance, this game will get the full treatment of updated graphics and a handful of other tweaks. Being that Final Fantasy VI (known in the US as Final Fantasy III) is one of the best in the series, the idea of playing it on the go is more than enough to make role-playing fans take note.

Final Fantasy VI follows the story of a young orphan named Terra, who is gifted with the ability to use magic. Although the story revolves somewhat around Terra, there is a huge cast of great characters with complex and compelling side stories to follow, as well. Each character is unique, and each has his or her own motives for taking on the evil empire that is threatening to use its newly discovered magic weapons to destroy the world. The game features one of the best villains in the series--the diabolical Kefka. In addition to the amazing cast of characters, there are not one but two huge worlds to explore, with all kinds of secrets to discover.

From a gameplay standpoint, Final Fantasy VI is standard for the series. You engage enemies in random encounters with up to four characters in your party. You can equip special stones known as magicite to your characters, and as you level up, your characters will learn magic spells based on the magicite they have equipped. You can also summon powerful creatures known as espers using the magicite.

The world of Final Fantasy VI is an interesting mix of fantasy and sci-fi themes. You'll see everything from laser-shooting mechs to airships to yetis to , of course, chocobos. The SNES version of the game felt massive at the time of its release, and it could easily take 60 or more hours to complete. The fact that Square Enix is going to be bringing all of that to the palm of your hand is exciting indeed.

According to Square Enix, this won't be a simple port. It promises to feature updates across the board, the most notable of which being enhancements to the now more than 10-year-old graphics and sound.

Final Fantasy VI Advance is scheduled to be released later this year. Stay tuned to this gamespace as we bring you more updates.

yeah and i think theres a glitch that doubled the number of my economizer without fighting those dinosaurs. man i finished this game like 10 times or so i can still remember how it looked like. great, great game.

I hated those dinosaurs, if I had a nickel for every time I used Ultima on those guys, I'd be a billionaire.

The biggest glitch I remember was that the evasion stat did absolutely nothing. Something in the code was messed up so that when it was supposed to check evade, it checked magic evade instead. That's probably what was wrong with the hit % stuff Dahl was talking about.

And of course, the Vanish + X-Zone thing that people argued about for years. I'm still not sure if that was a glitch or a "feature".

did any of you spend hours walking around a certain forest waiting for the brachosaur to drop an economizer? if you don't know what i'm talking about...you're not a real fan.

DahlVaughnni, you forgot about the biggest glitch in the game, the Relm Sketch glitch.

For those who don't know, when Relm, the magic painter girl, used her Sketch ability to make a copy of an enemy which would attack for you, there was a small, but non-zero chance that it would sketch something completely screwed up and freeze the game. What would happen is the save data on your game could get corrupted. Sometimes the result would be a completely unreadable save, and you'd have to (hopefully) use one of the other game saves. Another result, which happened to me, is that it would randomize the number of some of the items you had. You could in theory have 27 Atma Weapons, or 99 Genji gloves or something... other than completely unbalancing the game, you could continue on from there.

omfg. Dammit. Why won't they ever tell the release date? I want the game out NOW. ^_^ The game Kicked ass on SNES (FFIII) / PS1 (FFVI [Anthologies] ). Is this gonna be another game where it's gonna take forever to come out? I mean Starcraft: Ghost had like 3 - 10 Release Dates and they just won't make up their mind. >_

This is, without a doubt, the greatest game ever made. The scene in the opera house? Amazing. Sabin had the greatest special moves and Edgar was pretty cool too. Loved the story. A really cool, evil bad guy. And it was actually challenging unlike some other RPGs that you just walk through with ease.

None of you answered about the glitches so I guess I will, though I doubt he will look.

    1) Espers granted you strength at level up, but there was no strength attribute, it was called Vigor (which really should have been called strength)

    2) There was a hit % glitch. Haven't you ever noticed that unless the enemy has some sort of evade spell on, you NEVER missed?

    3) Some items didn't quite have the effects that they were meant to, whether they be too weak or too strong.

I can't think of any more off the top of my head, you guys can add to that as you see fit. I hope they remake the Slot option though for Setzer, that was screwy.

I own FF Anthology for the PS1, and FFIII for the SNES. This is a must-buy for me.

Oh maaan! I'm so excited! The PSone port in Final Fantasy Anthology really didn't do the game justice. The lag time for opening the menu and the audio--I think it got messed up in the port, 'cause in places it sounded so off-pitch--drove me insane. I'm really looking forward to this though! Sounds like it'll be so much better!

FF6 has got to be the best Final Fantasy ever. It's really underrated, probably because most younger people--you know, people who weren't allowed to play video games when this came out (...like me? I had just turned 4...)--are biased against the old, 2D SNES graphics. Personally, I love them. Edgar's freaking-out sprite is the BEST.

FF6 in 3D would be cool, but it's a classic, so maybe it's better for it to retain the classic look of sprites. One way or another, though, I am SO EXCITED about this!!!
