Super Mario World begins like most Mario games do, Princess Peach is captured and it's up to the world's greatest plumbers to save her from harm in some of the most fantastic and magical lands ever seen. Super Mario World isn't a revolution like the original Super Mario Bros., nor is it as wacky as the other two games that followed in the original's influential footsteps. However, it serves as the greatest refinement of the 2D Mario formula, feeling both familiar and fresh at the same time.
The platforming action is as superb as ever. There isn't a single problem with the gameplay itself. As either Mario or Luigi you'll traverse some of the most memorable worlds in gaming history. From rough mountainsides to haunted houses all the way to underground caverns, lush forests and even underwater levels.
The same classic enemies will appear again, from Koopas to Goombas and Lakitos to Spinies. Of course, at the end of each world you'll have to explore the depths of unique castles, each occupied by a young and quirky Koopa. The showdowns are all similar in that you ultimately have to find a way to whack them in the head three times to defeat them and watch their castle crumble before moving on.
Of course, being on the Game Boy Advance doesn't hamper the experience in any way. Now that the option to save anywhere has been added, along with the ability to choose either Mario or Luigi, gamers can play in short bursts and save when they're done. Of course, if you want to emulate the old SNES feel, try playing on the Game Boy Player and play Super Mario World on the TV in all it's pixilated glory!
The visuals are as beautiful as ever. It simply doesn't get better than Super Mario World's 16-bit visuals. Each one is as bright and colorful as the next. The game is simply beautiful, despite it's age. As for the audio, it sounds a bit tinny at times, but nothing can quite match those classic Mario tunes!
Super Mario World is a must-play, must-own kind of game. It's the epitome of 2D platforming, and one of the best Game Boy Advance games ever made, even if it is a port. There's no two ways around it, Super Mario World is an amazing achievement and a game that no one should be without.
