The Xbox is now only $179, which should make it easier to pick up a few key peripherals. If you have a newer TV, use an S-video connector rather than the basic composite one, and you'll see crisper text and richer colors. And if you don't have 5.1 home audio, then even a simple stereo-powered speaker set can give you more boom. If you have broadband, you'll want to try out the two months of Xbox Live included in the Xbox bundle, or you'll want to pick up an Xbox Live Starter Kit. A common broadband router will let you share the Internet connection with PCs in the house.

Xbox Holiday Bundle
The standard $179 Xbox package now includes two free months of Xbox Live and two games--Tetris Worlds and Star Wars: The Clone Wars--in addition to the Controller S game controller and the composite video connector.

Extra Controller-S controller
The Controller-S is much smaller and lighter than the original Xbox controller. There's a safety feature on the controller's cord, so if someone trips or yanks on the cord, a short section of the cable will give way and can be later reconnected. |

Xbox Live Starter Kit
You can get a full year of Xbox Live service by picking up this $49.99 Starter Kit. A communication headset and two demo games (MotoGP and Whacked!) are included in the kit. |

 |
S-video cable
If you have a recent television with S-video input, take advantage of the improved image quality an S-video cable offers. Compared with conventional composite cables, S-video cables improve video quality by separating each color signal onto a separate pin. |

 |
Powered speakers
Take advantage of the Xbox's audio fidelity by matching it with more than your TV's built-in speakers. There are a number of affordable audio products that combine two powered satellites and a subwoofer for sharp, intense sound.
 |
Optional: A four-port home router (for broadband users).
