Chapter Five: Walk-through

For those who haven't played Banjo-Kazooie, here's the plot in a nutshell. Banjo (a bear) and Kazooie (a female bird) live together on a large island. Don't ask way. Anyway, their less-than-friendly neighbor, Gruntilda, is a witch who hopes to become beautiful by stealing Banjo's little sister, Tooty. Naturally, this doesn't sit well with the easy-going bear, so he and his smart-mouthed sidekick eventually find Gruntilda. With the help of Jinjos that Banjo had rescured, Banjo andKazooie wind up burying the witch underneath a boulder - quite conveniently - in front of Banjo's home. Now, two years after that battle, the story of Banjo-Tooie begins...

Overworld: Spiral Mountain and Isle O' Hags

In the game's pause menu, Spiral Mountain and Isle O' Hags have their separate view totals screens, but in all actuality, they can be lumped together in a generic Overworld category (all the areas outside the "real" levels). Veterans of Banjo-Kazooie will remember Spiral Mountain from the original game, although its puzzling how much the world around him has changed in only a couple of years. Although Banjo will see many familiar faces from the first game, all the locations have changed drastically.

Spiral Mountain

Overview: This is the location from which Banjo starts the game. It's essentially a tutorial area for new players - but there are more than a few secrets to be found as well. See the Extras section for the game-spoiling details.

Landmarks

Banjo's house: This now burned-out house is where Banjo starts the game.
Gruntilda's lair: Atop the ladder to its entrance is a blue platform to fly off.
Spiral tower: It's the tall brown tower in the middle of the level. At the top is a blue platform to fly off.
Waterfall lake: This area comprises two waterfalls and a pool of water below.

Items to Find

Cheato page Location: It's in a cave alcove near the waterfall lake, reachable by pressing and holding A on the green jump pad in front of the cave.

Jinjo: Purple
Location: It's in the waterfall lake.
Prerequisite: Talon torpedo skill
Look for an underwater boulder with Kazooie's face on it. Press Z while underwater to launch Kazooie. Stand in front of the door and press A repeatedly to break it open. Behind the boulder is the jinjo.

Things to Do

Task: Go through the tutorial (optional).
Press B while next to the little red mole mounds throughout the level to learn more about Banjo-Kazooie's various moves.

Task: Release the fish from underneath the boulder.
Location: In front of Banjo's House
Prerequisite: Bill drill skill
Return to the boulder in front of Banjo's home. Break it to get the fish. Bring the fish to the moat surrounding the spiral tower nearby. In return, the fish will give Banjo more bubbles on the swimming meter as well as a faster way to swim: Press and hold A + B simultaneously.

Task: Leave by entering the digger tunnel.
In the tunnel, Banjo must fight a familiar face from Banjo-Kazooie. Strafe left or right to avoid this boss' potion throws. Shoot at the boss with eggs - two or three hits does the trick. Look for egg and life meter refills atop and alongside a rocky hill nearby. Go through the newly opened tunnel after defeating this boss.

Isle O' Hags: Jinjo Village

Overview: This sprawling area offers more eye candy than actual exploration value. Still, it gives the first glimpse of the overwhelming nature of the game's level sizes.

Landmarks

Sandy area: The large dune is to the right of the level entrance.
Jinjo houses: Ten exist, although only nine remain intact: red, green, black, orange, white, yellow, purple, blue. and brown.
Bottles' house: Its entrance lies across from King Jingaling's castle.
King Jingaling's throne room: This big yellow castle is in the middle of the level

Items to Find

Amaze-o-goggles
Location: Bottles' house
Talk to Goggles (one of Bottles' children) to get the invaluable amaze-o-goggles that let Banjo zoom out and in (C-left and C-right buttons) in the first-person view (activated by pressing C-up). This is the equivalent of a sniper sight.

Treble Clef
Location: It's atop the red jinjo house.
Prerequisite: Grip grab skill
Stand above the red house's entryway, then backflip jump onto the roof to grab it.

Things to Do

10 Jiggys to Find
