So, now you know something about how to move around, how to talk to people, how to buy and sell goods. You've even learned how to swing a sword, dagger, or club. Or have you? As you'll learn, there's more to winning a fight in EverQuest than toggling your autoattack on and waiting for the fight to end. The most successful characters know their strengths and weaknesses and know what sort of things they can and can't do in a fight. This chapter covers how to successfully fight alone and in a group - and even has some advice about how to win duels.
One of the most important things to do in Norrath is to /con monsters and NPCs. If you see a tough-looking NPC who scowls at you, you should stay away. If you see a monster that's far too powerful for you, you shouldn't attack it. Again, when you consider a monster, character, or NPC, you'll get a text message that describes how that monster or character views you and how strong it is relative to your own level.
If something cons white/black and gives the message: "Looks like an even fight," it's of the same level as you and may be a fair fight.
If something cons blue and gives the message: "Looks like you would have the upper hand," it's a level or two lower than you, and you'll stand a good chance of winning.
If something cons yellow and gives the message: "Looks like quite a gamble," it's a level or two higher than you, and you probably wouldn't beat it in a straight fight.
If something cons green and gives the message: "You would probably win this fight," it's three or more levels lower than you, and you'd probably win easily.
If something cons red and gives the message: "What would you like your tombstone to say," it's three or more levels higher than you, and you'd probably lose.
In general, at lower levels, pretty much anything that cons blue is fair game, and in many cases, so are mobs that con white/black. However, mobs that con yellow or red should be avoided, especially if you're hunting alone; they're probably too tough for you to fight safely. Mobs that con green are of much lower level than you and will likely not give you any experience for fighting them.
