Your Guide to Delfino Plaza

Trouble on the Runway

A menacing figure in the distance.
The trouble begins the minute the royal entourage from the Mushroom Kingdom touches down on Delfino Island. In the middle of the runway is a mysterious blob of paintlike sludge. The advisor to the princess asks Mario to go ashore to find assistance.

You'll find several crates, a few of the local citizens, and a strange object here. The object is FLUDD, which will introduce itself to you and run you through a tutorial. Take your new equipment back to the runway and blast the sludge away with water.

Meet your new best friend, FLUDD!
A goo-covered piranha plant will rear its head. The creature has no means of attack, but it will go into hiding if you fail to successfully blast its mouth with water. After spraying its gaping maw with water three times, you'll defeat the creature and earn your first shine. Back at Delfino Plaza, Mario is convicted of defacing the island and sentenced to clean everything up.

Delfino Plaza Overview

The over-the-shoulder perspective is great for precision aiming.
Before and after you access one of the game's seven episode areas, you'll find yourself in town. More than just a hub, Delfino Plaza has more than its share of shines, secrets, and coins. The varied architecture also provides plenty of opportunities to practice Mario's moves, and there are many island residents to talk to.

Something's Rotten in Delfino Plaza
Part One

A shadow has fallen over the plaza. Can Mario let the sunshine in?
Soon after you begin your cleanup job, you're likely to notice a large pile of sludge similar to the one you encountered at the airport. This time, slow-moving bubble creatures will emerge from the sludge. They'll glow before lobbing themselves at you for an attack, but they're easily dispatched with a few drops of H2O. If you stand in the nearby fountain, you're completely safe. After defeating these enemies, you'll be awarded with a shine. A statue will rise from the ground, and you'll meet the imposter face to face.

Part Two
Shadow Mario will promptly grab Princess Peach and make a run for it. Simply follow him around while spraying him with as much water as possible. He'll stop at specific locations during the chase if Mario isn't close by, so don't worry if you lose track of him. After you've hosed the pretender down, he'll drop Peach and make another mad break. You won't be able to spray him this time, so simply follow him to the statue, where he'll paint a glowing "M" and then escape into it. If you choose to jump into this portal yourself, spray it with a bit of water to soften it up and prepare to travel to Bianco Hills.

Things Are Looking Brighter
This section will you give you an idea of how things will unfold in town. Note that you must complete each requirement in the order that it appears to trigger the next change.

After collecting three shines...
Another large pile of goop will appear in town, this time on the west side of town. It's a piranha plant that seems to be covered in oil. Spray the black mass until the plant shows its face and then hit it three times to send it back into the pile. Repeat the process as necessary, and victory will be yours. If you want a safe spot for this low-key battle, stand on the nearby boat or in the water and blast away from the fixed perspective.

After you've watered your plant to death, a hut will spring from the ground. On the wall of this shop is a gate to the second area of the game, Ricco Harbor. Inside are a pair of raccoons who will give you a shine for every 10 blue coins you trade in.

After collecting five shines...
Yet again you'll do battle with a crud-encrusted carnivorous plant. After collecting your fifth shine, the town intro will display a terrible mess in the northeast part of town. Head there and spray the pile to begin another simple battle. After six sprays in the mouth (the method used to defeat the other plants still applies) you'll reveal a lighthouse and the passageway to the third area, Gelato Beach.

After collecting 10 shines...
A strange, spiked turtle-like ship will appear on the west side of town. The princess is mysteriously absent from the square, so you'd better go check things out. Your nemesis will speed off with your love interest toward Pinna Park. You'll now be dropped off right by the red dome. Hop in to fire yourself out of the cannon and access the new level.

After collecting 20 shines...
You'll notice that the shine emblem in the middle of town has a strange light emitting from it, and the locals nearby are staring into the sky. When you stand on the emblem and do the same, you'll be transported to a new level: Noki Bay.

After completing episode four in Pinna Park...
After completing this fateful (and quite easy) episode, you'll return to Delfino Plaza to find the imposter hauling around a strange egg. Introduce him to the business end of FLUDD yet again to convince him to drop the egg, which will have a thought bubble depicting a certain type of fruit. Bring the required fruit to the egg and you'll be able to use Yoshi.

This also means you'll have access to the Sirena Beach area. Behind the statue on the south side of town, a pineapple clogs a pipe on top of a roof. Have Yoshi devour the fruit to uncover the entrance to the level.

After collecting 25 shines...
When you've ensured that the Yoshi egg has a safe home in town and have earned a minimum of 25 shines, you'll find that your shadowy twin is carrying a shiny and useful looking object around. Soak him and you'll have access to the propeller attachment. Pay attention to the intro when this event happens, as it'll clue you in to the location of a shine that was previously unreachable.

After collecting 30 shines...
After you've earned the propeller attachment and collected five more shines to bring your total to 30, your antagonist will show up carrying the powerful rocket nozzle. You know what to do. When you've claimed the new attachment for your water pump, you'll be able to reach several new shines in town and the ability to reach a new area. To reach Pianta Village, rocket to the shop of the Shine Gate and drop yourself down the pipe on top of the arch.

Delphino Plaza's looking awfully wet.
After you've chased Shadow Mario down in every single level...
You'll need to have completed the seventh episode of each of the seven main areas in order for this to happen--Delfino Plaza will be almost completely flooded. It's rather clear who's to blame. Chase the perpetrator to the previously barred cave behind Shine Gate and prepare to enter Corona Mountain.
