Controlling Yoshi

This green-and-white egg craves the spiky sweetness of pineapple.
You'll first be able to team up with Yoshi after beating episode four in Pinna Park. When you mount Yoshi, a fruit gauge will replace Mario's water gauge. This will deplete slowly as time passes and more quickly when Yoshi sprays juice. If your dinosaur pal runs out of juice, or becomes submerged in deep water, he'll disintegrate and return to his original egg location in the level.

Press A
Yoshi will jump. Holding the button will cause him to tread air and gain an extra bit of height and hang time. Yoshi can execute all the jump variations that Mario can, with the exception of the turn-around jump. Yoshi's triple jump and spin jumps yield a much greater distance than Mario's.

Press B
This will cause your dinosaur pal to unleash his tongue and gulp down the first thing he can latch on to. Most enemies can be eaten, even those that are invincible to normal methods of attack. Even neutral creatures like birds, bees, and butterflies can be gulped down.

Press L While Jumping
Yoshi will perform the hip drop on behalf of his rider with exactly the same effects.

Press R

Yoshi shows a blatant disrespect for the law.
With this button held down, Yoshi will expel colorful fruit-flavored vomit that his enemies will find anything but refreshing. Like Mario, Yoshi can spin or spin-jump and spray for a sprinkler effect. There is a certain viscous orange substance on the island that only Yoshi's fruity spray can dissolve.

Note: Spraying enemies with different-colored fruit juice will have various effects. Blasting an enemy with yellow or orange juice will transform him or her into a platform. Purple juice will turn your enemy into a moving platform, which will continue moving in the direction the enemy was facing. Pink juice will yield a platform that stays still for a couple of seconds and then rises straight up. All platforms will blink a few times before they disappear.

Press X
Dismount. You'll be launched from Yoshi's back a fair distance into the air. This technique can be used with other jumps for extra height.
