Secret Shines
There are two extra shines in each level that are separate from the normal episodes and are only accessible after that level has been cleared. Many are red-coin challenges set in past obstacle courses, while others are totally unique. You may very well uncover some of these shines on your own, but this list will make sure that you can find every last shine available.

Bianco Hills
Episode Three - Return to the cave behind the windmill and reenter the obstacle course. Slam the red switch to start a one minute timer.
Episode Six - This challenge also takes place in the cave. This time, you'll have a minute and a half.

Ricco Harbor
Episode Two - Ride a squid into the cave and race for all you're worth. If you manage to get a time under 40 seconds, you'll be rewarded with an extra shine.
Episode Four - Take a trip back to the obstacle course in the tower. Hit the red-coin switch and scramble for the eight coins. You have 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Gelato Beach
Episode One - Water the sprout and hop inside the sand castle to return to the obstacle course. There are more coins to collect and a 1-minute time limit.
Episode Four - Find the sprout that creates a staircase to the higher part of the level. Spray the back wall to uncover a secret shine.

Pinna Park
Episode Two - Whack the mole and return to the obstacle course. Gather your red coins before time expires and you're done. It's fairly simple. Just don't get careless on the disappearing blocks.
Episode Six - Return to the carousel with Yoshi for more red-coin-collecting madness. Take note of the coin locations before jumping from block to block. The timing can be difficult. Make sure to get the extra life in case you can't win the first few times.

Sirena Beach
Episode Two - Complete the obstacle course again, this time by collecting the red coins.
Episode Four - Run through the casino until you gain access to the warp pipe. Hop in for another red-coin challenge.

Noki Bay
Episode Six - You're in for yet another red-coin obstacle course. Keep an eye out for the red coins and don't forget to collect the extra life in the middle of the level.
Any Episode - Go through the cliff on the left side until you reach the top terrace with a tree. There's a golden bird who will turn into a shine when blasted with pressurized water.

Pianta Village
Episode Five - Return to the relatively low-key obstacle course using Yoshi. Watch your step and use your water pack to cross the shorter gaps.
Episode Eight - Find your way to the very top of the gigantic tree in the center of the village. Once you're there, ignore everything your mother taught you and stare directly into the sun. Now, pull the trigger and cut loose with the water.

Other Secrets
Mario Sunshine's secrets are really in the incredible number of coins and shines there are to collect, but there are a few Easter eggs.

After collecting 30 shines...
You can find a Pianta wearing sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt in every area of the game. When you've collected at least 30 shines, he'll give you a pair of sunglasses. Aside from looking quite handsome on Mario, they make it look like someone has turned the brightness control of your television down. Talk to him again to take them off.

After Completing the Game and Saving to a Memory Card...
Talk to the suave Pianta again. He'll now totally deck you out with sunglasses and a shine-covered shirt. Mario is looking smooth indeed.

After collecting 120 shines...
You'll get an improved save icon on the start screen and see a very slightly modified ending. Surely you deserve more for all your dedication, but you also have the satisfaction of a job well done. We at GameSpot salute you.
