Bombing run is an exciting addition to the Unreal Tournament series. It mirrors the offensive and defensive concepts of capture the flag, has a scoring system similar to that of football, but plays like rugby with rocket launchers. This section provides some general strategies for bombing run success and descriptions of the bombing run maps.
Like in any team game, an organized team has a huge advantage over a disorganized one. If you're playing on a random server and see no players playing defense, think about stepping up and assuming the role. A team that lacks defense generally lacks wins. Depending on the map and the number of players in the game, a team should designate one or two defenders, a couple of ballcarriers, a lead "blocker" who runs in front of the ballcarrier to take out defenses, and some rovers who blast enemies attempting to pursue the ballcarrier.
When you have the ball, you can't use weapons--you can only launch the ball. If you're under attack from a single enemy and are too far away from the goal to take a shot, consider dropping the ball and retaliating. Here's a fun trick: Launch the ball directly at the enemy player. Your opponent will likely run into the ball, disabling his or her weaponry. Quickly switch to a rocket launcher or flak cannon and terminate the opponent before he or she realizes what just happened.
Good ballhandling skills typically evolve into consistent scoring. You can't fire a weapon while holding the ball, but here's a trick to "increase" your ballcarrying speed: Launch the ball in front of you (basically the direction you're running) and then switch to the translocator. Fire the translocator toward the ball and teleport. Pick up the ball again and repeat! This is a faster way of moving, and it's useful if you're not under heavy pursuit.
Passing also plays a vital role for a successful team. Naturally, you should look to pass off the ball when you're under attack, but there are more strategic uses. There are several maps with numerous routes to the enemy goal, including a couple of bases that feature holes in the roof for easy access to the goal. So, assign a teammate to stand near one of these holes. Try to remain out of sight from other enemies. Pass the ball up to this teammate (since you can't translocate with the ball). The teammate gets the glory, but don't underestimate the glory of a perfect assist!
Keeping track of the current score and the score limit is very important. If the score limit is 20 and your team has 18, don't try to run the ball through the goal for a seven-point goal. You score three points for launching the ball into the goal. It's much easier than running into the goal. Get the win and ignore those extra points.
Speed is the most important adrenaline power-up in bombing run. One strategy might be to save your full adrenaline meter in a close game. Look for an opportunity to exploit the speed power-up to take a lead in the closing stages of a match.
