This year's Unreal Tournament wouldn't be the same without the capture the flag competition. Some fantastic new maps have been added to the competition, and so have some new renditions of old favorites, including a new version of Facing Worlds and sequels to November (now called December) and Lava Giant (now called Magma). This section provides some general strategies for success in capture the flag games and descriptions of the capture the flag maps.
Capture the flag games are likely as second nature as deathmatches to first-person shooter veterans. Unreal Tournament 2003 offers a new twist with an adjustment to the translocator. Translocators also serve as cameras! Launch a translocator disc and then hit the "select translocator" key again (defaults to Q). Selecting the translocator a second time activates the camera. Drop a translocator camera near the flag to monitor the base while you collect weapons or power-ups. Place a translocator camera in the enemy base to keep tabs on their defensive strength. It's a useful new tool and one that should be used!
Knowing the fastest escape routes is essential to being an effective flag runner. If you plan to be a flag runner, load the map in instant action mode and explore the area around the enemy's flag. Look for the fastest routes out of the base and to the map's middle area, where teammates can help escort you to your own base. An escape may include double jumps and dropping from heights.
Escape routes are important, but so are entry points. Look for all possible entry points, including ones that require the translocator. Or even add a twist to a standard entry point to gain an advantage. For instance, drop a translocator camera in the enemy flag room. Find a hiding spot near the enemy base so you can monitor traffic in and out. Use the camera to observe the passing traffic and deduce when the flag is least defended. You'll have a much better shot at it than if you were going up against a heavy defense.
If you've grabbed the enemy flag but yours has been taken as well, find a hiding spot immediately! You should even request aid, because the other team is actively seeking you. Make sure you're fully stocked with weapons, ammunition, health, and shield packs.
Make sure flag defenders comb the area around the team's base and stock up on health, shield packs, and adrenaline capsules. A timely adrenaline power-up can help defend the flag! Adrenaline serves an offensive player as well. Both invisible and speed provide a big advantage to a flag runner.
