Chapter 1: Weapons, Power-Ups, and Adrenaline
In this section, you'll find a complete rundown of Unreal Tournament 2003's weapons, items, and power-ups. You'll also discover the uses for an important new addition to the game: adrenaline. The adrenaline power-up combos are revealed with specific strategies for implementing each into your gameplay.

Unreal Tournament 2003's assault rifle may be one of the best starting weapons in the first-person shooter genre, but experienced players will still run quickly to the nearest shock rifle, flak cannon, or rocket launcher. Think of the assault rifle as a toned-down minigun with added grenade-launching capability.

The assault rifle's primary fire mode is similar to a machine gun, with moderate to low accuracy at longer ranges. You probably won't win many battles with the assault rifle, but it can be an effective weapon if your enemy is relatively low on health. Still, don't go around hunting for victims with only the assault rifle. If you happen to spawn near a couple of enemies engaged in a deathmatch battle, start pumping assault rifle bullets into the group and hope for an easy kill. Or better yet, toss some grenades with its secondary fire mode.

The assault rifle's secondary fire mode is much more useful and a viable deathmatch weapon in many instances (though most other Unreal Tournament 2003 weapons still take precedence). Press the secondary fire trigger with the assault rifle equipped to launch a timed grenade that explodes after a few seconds or on contact with an enemy. Hold down the secondary fire button to toss the grenade further. The grenade's explosion is quite powerful and capable of killing a healthy enemy with a direct hit.

Toss some grenades into a group of combating enemies--they're likely to be so enthralled with their battle that the grenades bouncing at their feet will be ignored. If you happen upon a group and lack splash-damage weaponry (rocket launcher, flak cannon, redeemer, shock rifle), consider switching to the assault rifle and hurling some grenades into the group. You'll likely rack up more kills on average than attempting to fire a link gun or minigun into the same group. If you respawn after death and are instantly chased by an enemy, drop some grenades and hope your pursuer takes a wrong step. You spawn with four grenades and can hold up to eight.
