Final Fantasy X
Projected Release: January 2002
Publisher: Square
System: PlayStation 2

Already available in Japan, Final Fantasy X appears to have received more than just a graphical upgrade in the series' transition from the PlayStation to PlayStation 2. With a mature look and feel similar to Final Fantasy VIII's, the plot revolves around Tidus, a "blitzball" player, and his eventual quest to defeat an elemental force known only as Sin. Among the gameplay changes are a turn-based battle system that adds a larger strategic element to combat and a new method of character advancement that takes place on a game board called the "Sphere Board." The visual and aural changes are dramatic as well. Real-time backgrounds and a behind-the-back perspective replace the series' previous use of prerendered backgrounds and a top-down view. But one of the most anticipated changes has to be the use of voice for the main characters' dialogue rather than text. Due to the lengthy translation and dubbing process, Final Fantasy X is scheduled for a January 2002 release.

Final Fantasy XI
Projected Release: 2002
Publisher: Square
System: PlayStation 2

Little is known about Final Fantasy XI other than it will be Square's first attempt at an online RPG, possibly similar to EverQuest and Ultima Online. The development team is being led by Hiromichi Tanaka (Chrono Cross) and Kouichi Ishi (Secret of Mana series).

Kingdom Hearts
Projected Release: 2002
Publisher: Square
System: PlayStation 2

Perhaps the most intriguing title to emerge from the 2001 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Kingdom Hearts is the long-rumored collaboration between Square and Disney. Shown in Square's booth as part of its video presentation, the game features familiar Disney faces as well as new characters designed by Tetsuya Nomura, the man behind the characters in Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and X. Seeing Final Fantasy-style characters side by side with Donald and Goofy is odd, yet strangely captivating. It appears that Square is aiming for a younger audience with Kingdom Hearts, but will it be able to woo the older crowd as well?

Final Fantasy XII
Publisher: Square
Projected Release: 2002?
System: PlayStation 2

Even though Final Fantasy X is not even available in the US yet, Square has already announced that Final Fantasy XII will be developed by a team led by Yasumi Matsuno (Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story) and Hiroyuki Itou (Final Fantasy IX).

Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX
Publisher: Square
Projected Release: 2002?
System: PlayStation 2

Square has announced plans to remake Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX for the PlayStation 2, but it has not revealed what kinds of new features, if any, these games will have. Also unclear is whether the titles will be available separately or as part of a package similar to Final Fantasy Anthology.
