Introduction

Some people collect baseball cards, others collect skateboards.
Skateboarding video games are a relatively new breed. Originating in the mid-'80s, they have inched their way to the top of the gaming charts, much to the surprise of many. Skateboarding itself has been around well before the first game systems hit living rooms across America. The earliest skateboarding games consisted mostly of preset challenges and action-based elements, and some were akin to a racing or platform game. Nevertheless, they were fun in their own right and laid the ever-important groundwork.

Today's skateboarding games transform you into a professional skateboarder, offering complete freedom to create sick trick combinations and unique runs. Although no game can provide a truly realistic experience, some of the latest skateboarding games capture the essence of skateboarding: creativity and experimentation. Game environments in today's skateboarding games are fully interactive, letting would-be shredders launch off every ramp, carve every pool, grind every rail, and wreak havoc on just about anything else lying around. And the best part is there is no need to worry about broken bones or ugly bruises. The only thing that might suffer bruising is your ego after a friend royally schools you in the two-player mode.

In this feature, you will learn about most of the skateboarding games released throughout the years, with interesting facts about many of them. The Old School section covers the skateboarding games released in the '80s, while the New School section covers the ones released in the past few years. Nestled between is the Middle School section, which deals with the skateboarding titles released between these periods. Other information includes details on upcoming skateboarding games (Future Sessions) and a look at skateboarding on the handheld systems (Skating on the Go). Make sure to check out the Rad Links section, too, for additional information. If you pay attention, you might even learn a thing or two about skateboarding. So grab your board...er, mouse and get ready to grind through this feature!
