Back in the early 1990s, arcades were the most happening place to be. Lines of screaming hyperactive kids - and the parents they dragged there - would gather around to see and experience the latest in computer graphics and entertainment. Back then arcades offered an experience that no personal computer or console game machine could even dream of. People considered classics such as Time Traveler, Smash TV, High Impact Football, Cyberball 2072, and many others to be some of the most innovative and enjoyable video games of their time. However, none of these games seemed to have the impact that one 1992 game did.

That game was Mortal Kombat.

The combination of realistic graphics and mysterious mythical settings enticed gamers to learn the numerous secrets hidden within this dark and intimidating game. And in an added twist, not only did combatants spew puddles of blood from each blow, but an announcer summoned the victor to "finish" his opponent off with a death move. Soon Mortal Kombat became a cultural icon, creating an extremely large fan base. Since then, MK has spawned four sequels, an adventure game, two movies, a live-action television show, an animated series, and countless MK-related paraphernalia. Join us as we teleport you back to where it all began and take you through part one of our history of one of the biggest video game franchises of all time.

Special thanks goes to Frank Chan.
