Functional, protective, and still the champ.

The Light Shield has a dimmer dial, a power switch, and a passthrough port.

You wouldn't expect a peripheral from a retailer to be the best of its class, but that's exactly what the Light Shield Advance is. Like the GlowGuard, the Light Shield Advance folds down to protect the GBA screen, but unlike the GlowGuard, it sits completely flush on the unit without placing stress on one specific point. In addition to a passthrough port to allow for multiplayer gameplay while in use, the Light Shield Advance includes a power switch and a dimming dial. The solidly constructed protective flap can be adjusted to any angle to allow for a variety of lighting conditions and may be tightened if it ever becomes loose. In addition to offering the most effective protective properties, the Light Shield Advance fits flush on the Game Boy Advance, making it the most travelworthy of all the GBA lights. Just fold it down and toss the unit into your bag. The one drawback is that the light bulb is not LED, so its longevity is suspect. Pelican released a GBA light under the same name at the system's launch, but it has since been recalled due to this very concern. Another minor issue with the Light Shield Advance is its light's power. It illuminates the screen better than most GBA lights, but it can't compare with the Sharklight or Worm Light Plus in this regard. The Light Shield Advance can also be difficult to remove from the GBA, but its power switch eliminates the need to ever remove it. The Light Shield Advance offers more features than the competition at the same price, is solidly constructed, and doubles as a protective case. While no GBA light is perfect, GameStop's entry provides the most bang for the buck and has managed to fend off all the competitors that have come since its release. Perhaps when Portable Monopoly's kits finally circulate we'll have a new champion, but until then the Light Shield Advance remains on top.

Score: B+
