The Game Collector is here to help you find good deals on games that GameSpot's editors recommend. Many of you often write us asking how the games included on the Top Games page make it there. Our Top Games lists are compiled based on the highest scores over the past year. This week's Game Collector is taken directly from the Top Video Games page, so you can count on the following entries to be both good and value-oriented. If you're the type of person who must have marquee titles on all platforms, this week's Game Collector should serve you well.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 - Sony PlayStation (2000)
Street Price: $15.99

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 has served as a wake-up call for all the clones and pretenders that had hit the market in the year between the two Tony Hawk games. The game offers tons of replay value, amazing graphics on both the PlayStation and the Dreamcast, a top-notch soundtrack, and even a level editor to keep things entertaining once you've mastered all the existing levels. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was developed with plenty of room for innovation and freestyling on the part of the player.
NFL 2K1 - Sega Dreamcast (2000)
Street Price: $15.99

The Dreamcast's built-in 56k modem ushered in a new standard for sports games in the year 2000. For the first time, players were able to go online with a console and find human opponents to line up against. Visual Concepts made all the right sacrifices with NFL 2K1. When you compare it with the original NFL 2K, you'll notice that the graphical detail has been cut back ever so slightly; however, the improved speed of 2K1 more than makes up for it. NFL 2K1 still stands as the best 3D football game ever.
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - Game Boy Advance (2001)
Street Price: $37.99

Reminiscent of the exceptional PlayStation side-scroller Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (which is much more difficult to track down), Circle of the Moon was easily one of the best of more than 20 games initially available for the Game Boy Advance. The game has excellent open-ended gameplay and creepy environments, and plenty of challenges.
Test Drive Le Mans - Sega Dreamcast (2000)
Street Price: $24.72

TDLM has something for everyone. Fans of both the meticulous simulation as well as arcade-style racing can customize the game's options and settings to their respective preferences and enjoy the game. What other racing game gives you the option to drive in 24-hour races in real time? The game's strengths do not stop with fast frame rates--there are 40-plus authentic GT1 and GT2 cars in the game, from manufacturers such as BMW, Audi, and Chrysler, as well as 10 ACO racing circuit-approved tracks.

Banjo-Tooie - Nintendo 64 (2000)
Street Price: $24.03

The seemingly free-form nature of 3D platformers is used to its fullest potential in Banjo-Tooie, which is evident in the game's incredible range of gameplay. Aside from controlling the three playable characters--Banjo, Kazooie, and the voodoo shaman Mumbo Jumbo, Banjo-Tooie includes a variety of other game types, including but not limited to a first-person shooting mode and a racing mode. Even the standard 3D platformer model is well used, with a huge range of puzzles and plenty of item collection.
NBA 2K1 - Sega Dreamcast (2000)
Street Price: $20.99

NBA 2K was a promising start for Sega's basketball franchise, but NBA 2K1 refined the formula and added a healthy amount of new gameplay modes to the mix. You can challenge the improved computer AI on some of the most famous street courts in the US, manage your team in the franchise mode, or jump online to play many of the game's modes against other Dreamcast players around the country. NBA 2K was good but NBA 2K1 is the best hoops game on next-generation consoles.
Dragon Warrior I&II - Game Boy Color (2000)
Street Price: $27.99

Although Dragon Warrior I&II's music is the cherry on top of an otherwise flavor-rich gameplay experience, it's the inclusion of both games on a single cartridge that lifts the release to godlike status. Dragon Warrior may seem like just an appetizer for the full-featured RPG experience in Dragon Warrior II, but the ability to play both games in succession and witness the interaction of their storylines greatly enhances the satisfaction gleaned from both titles.
Twisted Metal: Black - Sony PlayStation 2 (2001)
Street Price: $36.99

Twisted Metal: Black looks, sounds, and, most importantly, plays better than any car combat game before it. The cinema sequences that explain the storylines of each character as you advance through the game are so well written and look so good that they actually make you want to go back and complete the game with each character. Add in a fantastic two-to-four-player multiplayer mode, and Twisted Metal: Black is the only game you'll need for the PlayStation 2 for a long time to come.
Paper Mario - Nintendo 64 (2001)
Street Price: $28.99
Check Latest Prices »
With stunning graphics, excellent sound, and extremely solid gameplay, Paper Mario is a quality game on all fronts. The sprite-based graphics, combined with classic Mario gameplay, make this a must-own for any Mario lover, and the simplified RPG system makes this a compelling game for both RPG fans and non-fans alike. Games of this caliber are few and far between, and it's too bad that Paper Mario might be the last great 2D Mario game.
