Enguard
While riding Enguard, the swordfish with a perpetual smile, Donkey and Diddy could kill several of the various aquatic enemies that plagued their homeland, rather than simply avoiding them. Enguard also helped them swim with elegance instead of splashing around wildly.

Winky
The only explanation for Winky's being able to carry Donkey Kong on his back and jump 20 feet straight up is that he is some kind of mutant frog that is indigenous only to the realm of Donkey Kong. Use of this amphibious freak was the only way you could pull off certain jumps in the game. Winky was great for stomping the posteriors of spiny bees as well.

Expresso
Proving that ostriches were good for more than just burying their heads in the sand, Expresso carried Donkey and Diddy across great chasms that Winky didn't have the legs for. Though Expresso couldn't exactly fly, he was the best way to get around certain levels. Donkey and Diddy didn't care too much about this bird, though, as they would often dismount in midair to gain extra height in a jump, oblivious to the fact that Expresso would frequently fall to an untimely death, screeching angrily.

Squawks
A holder of flashlights and shooter of nuts, Squawks was quite useful. This bird was a rarity in the Donkey Kong world, only showing up when none of the other animal characters could lend a hand.

King K. Rool
King K. Rool was the head croc behind the hordes of crocs that sought to take a bite out of Donkey and Diddy on each level. This guy was a particularly nasty final boss, and you were lulled into thinking you had defeated him when you hadn't - game credits actually started rolling on the screen, and then the King would get up and start whipping his crown at you again. But even when he was finally down, the game still wasn't over, unless you had found every secret room in every level.
