Defining Games

By: Brad Shoemaker

Introduction

The video game world is growing by leaps and bounds every year, faster than most people can reasonably keep up with. Once a casual pastime, playing games is now a hobby millions share, not to mention a booming industry. With the increased size and complexity of games comes an ever-expanding bank of terms specific to both console and PC games. It would be nigh impossible to catalog every term related closely or loosely to gaming, but we have put together what we think is a relevant sampling of the words, phrases, and acronyms you might find in a gaming magazine, on a web site, or in the odd gaming conversation.

Throughout the next few pages, we divide the gaming universe into several categories, with entries that will help you get a grip on the video game lexicon in use today. Some of these terms are pretty technical, but even if they don't make complete sense to you, you'll have a better understanding of the terms when they're used in the right context. At the very least, you can impress your friends with your knowledge of "Gouraud shading" and "mip-mapping."

Special thanks to Sharon Gostlin for her contributions.
