Final Fantasy X is a huge, spectacular game--yet for all its impressive production values, one of the best things about Square's first PlayStation 2 role-playing game is its complex story. At first, the events seem typical of other role-playing games--Tidus, the main character, soon finds himself in a strange land under assault by an enormous, nefarious creature. To try to stop this thing, he eventually joins forces with a determined young summoner and her companions. You'll learn much about all these characters over the course of Final Fantasy X, which takes plenty of time to develop their personalities. Meanwhile, the plot sets itself up to use typical role-playing game clichés but in most cases cleverly avoids whatever expectations you may have for it. The ending of the game--which you'll reach after a long, difficult journey--is emotionally charged and satisfying.

Other Nominees:

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Max Payne
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
