Wario Land 3 is the first runner-up in the Best Game Boy Color game category, but only by a hair. Frankly, 2000 saw many good Game Boy games, and it was difficult to choose just a few. But Wario Land 3 is exceptional. Arriving just a couple of years after the previous Wario Land game, this platformer moves leaps and bounds beyond what Mario's counterpart has accomplished in the past. With more than 20 levels and a bevy of plot twists, the game is challenging, it looks great (complete with animated sequences), and it stays true to the style Mario universe fans want.

As Frank Provo wrote in the GameSpot review, "As far as platformers go, Wario Land 3 is a game that fires on all cylinders. Massive replay value rounds out perfect gameplay, a battery save keeps your progress, and a plethora of cutscenes further serves to delight one's senses past the point of pleasure."

Donkey Kong Country is not a stranger to most. The game first came out on the Super Nintendo (SNES) back in 1994, and it set a standard for 2D platform games. The Game Boy Color version of Donkey Kong Country is not a perfect translation, but it is close enough to earn it a seat as a runner-up to the Game Boy Color game of the year. What picky players may notice is that some of the graphics and environmental treatments are gone and that the sounds and music don't hold up to the original.

You play through 41 levels in seven different territories, warding off obstacles in living and inanimate form, which eventually lead you to the bosses. You gather bananas, spell out K-O-N-G by collecting letter boxes, pick up extra health, and toss or smash the barrels to play as Diddy or Donkey, who both have different strengths and weaknesses. Hidden areas will offer up bonus points, and the overall goal of is to complete the levels, finding 100 percent of the secrets. While there are differences between the original and this Game Boy Color version, the game controls basically the same.
