GameSpot Preview Excerpt
"Aliens Versus Predator 2 will be a first-person shooter that lets you play as... the famous alien pop-culture icons. For good measure, you can also become a human space marine. Fans of the original... will find that the new installment stays very true to the original's distinct feel."

Aliens Versus Predator 2 will be the sequel to the 1999 sci-fi-themed first-person shooter that featured three very different playable characters. The sequel will feature improved versions of each of these characters: the heavily armed space marine from Aliens, the xenomorph alien (also from the Aliens), and the predator from Predator, the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Do you think more PC shooters should be based on action movies?

It depends on the movie

The original Aliens Versus Predator was something of a cult hit; it garnered a loyal following thanks to its distinctive gameplay and excellent atmosphere. The original game had very good, very creepy sound effects that helped reproduce some of the most frightening and thrilling sequences from the movies it drew upon; for instance, the space marine character had a blinking motion-sensor device, as the soldiers did in Aliens; in some levels, the sensor would remain blank and then would suddenly detect lots of movement all around, just as in the movie. Also, the predator character had the same cloaking device as in the film and could use it to ambush enemies and other players.

The sequel will feature enhanced graphics, and each of the sequel's characters will retain enough of the previous game's attacks and abilities so that fans of the first game will be able to get right into the game and play. What's more, AVP2 will feature a more cohesive single-player campaign and new multiplayer modes as well. In addition to standard deathmatch and team deathmatch competition, the game will feature two completely new team-based multiplayer modes. One of these will be "survival," in which player characters will slowly mutate into a different character each time they're fragged and earn points for how long they manage to remain unmutated. The other new multiplayer mode will be "hunt," in which one type of character, like the predator, will be declared the hunter, and another, like the marines, will be the prey--each time a member of the hunter's team is fragged, that team becomes the prey team. We'll have more coverage on Aliens Versus Predator 2 as we get closer to the game's release date this November.

Aliens Versus Predator 2 will be a sci-fi-themed first-person shooter that'll feature enhanced versions of the original game's three characters: the marine, the predator, and the alien. AVP2 will feature a more cohesive single-player game and two new multiplayer modes.
