The concept is extremely ambitious: You play as a god, and get to rule over an entire world. Designed over the course of four years by Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment, Max Payne is one shooter that lived up to the hype. The game's style is clearly influenced by Hong Kong action cinema, particularly the work of director John Woo. Max Payne looks beautiful and plays great--it features an innovative play mechanic called "bullet time," a special ability that causes all the action around you to slow down dramatically.

Baldur's Gate II is certainly one of the greatest computer role-playing games of all time. Sequel to the 1998 classic, Baldur's Gate II is better than its highly acclaimed predecessor in every respect. It features an epic quest, memorable characters, and countless colorful settings. This surprising first-person shooter was inspired by the work of the well-known British horror novelist, Clive Barker. You play as Patrick Galloway, an explorer and student of the occult who returns to visit an old friend at his ominous manor in Ireland. The manor is haunted, and you must battle the vicious creatures infesting the place, and also your friend's sinister siblings. Undying is atmospheric and often quite scary.

The best helicopter simulation since Jane's Longbow 2, Enemy Engaged is Razorworks' sequel to the popular 1999 sim, Apache/Havoc. It accurately models all of the characteristics of two different rotary-wing vehicles, and gives you a very real sense of what it's like to sit at the helm of either one. Yet despite its sophistication, Enemy Engaged is also highly accessible for all players. It received GameSpot's Best Simulation of 2000 award.
