At GameSpot, we play a ton of games each month so that we can bring you our reviews, previews, and feature stories. As you might expect, most games get shelved just as soon as we're done with an assignment, so we can quickly move on to the next one. It's only the rarest and best games that continue to be played for pleasure once we're done with them for work. This week's Game Collector is devoted to the games that are occupying what free time we have. A lot of them are recent releases--March was a great month for gaming!
Freedom Force (2001)

Executive Editor Greg Kasavin can't get enough of Freedom Force lately, and has been singing its praises to all the others on staff. Of course, he's not the only one who thinks Freedom Force is amazing--this superhero-themed role-playing game has a great story and lots of personality, and is really fun to play. It's one of the best games so far this year.
Global Operations (2001)
Street Price: $29

GameSpot Live's Ryan Mac Donald, one of our most devoted Counter-Strike players, has recently been spending his time with Global Ops instead. He's not totally convinced that Global Ops is a Counter-Strike killer--but the fact that this tactical team-based action game has pulled him away from CS at all is pretty impressive.
Heroes of Might and Magic IV (2001)
Street Price: $39

Managing Editor Andrew Park was skeptical about whether Heroes IV would turn out as good as its predecessors, but after hunkering down with it for untold hours, he came away convinced that it's as good as this classic turn-based strategy series has ever been. Now the rest of us are getting addicted to Heroes IV right along with him.
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (2001)
Street Price: $49

As you might expect, there are at least a couple of Star Wars fans around here--but those who don't particularly care for it have still been impressed by Jedi Knight II, which is by every means an outstanding action game and an outstanding Star Wars game as well. Senior Editor Amer Ajami has played it the most thus far--he didn't immediately warm up to it, but once he got his hands on a lightsaber, he was hooked.
Star Trek Bridge Commander (2001)
Street Price: $39

News Editor Giancarlo Varanini all too eagerly took to the captain's chair when Bridge Commander showed up. This is really the first space simulation that truly makes you feel as though you're in command of a huge capital ship, and it makes great use of the Star Trek source material. Giancarlo's even entertained trying out its voice recognition feature, but the rest of us refuse to listen to his Picard impression.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (2001)
Street Price: $39

Hardware Editor Sam Parker loves testing all the latest graphics and sound cards that come into our offices, but especially so now that he's got Medal of Honor: Allied Assault on his test system. This superb first-person shooter, set during World War II, makes you feel as though you're taking part in a big-budget action film. Every level is meticulously detailed and very exciting, and the entire game looks and sounds fantastic.
Disciples II: Dark Prophecy (2001)
Street Price: $29

Media Editor Craig Beers started looking like one of Disciples II's frightening undead creatures shortly after we received the game--like many others who've played this excellent turn-based strategy game, he found himself playing the game late into the night...and straight till dawn. Disciples II boasts some of the best graphics ever seen in this type of game, and it plays great.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (2001)
Street Price: $39

Executive Editor Jeff Gerstmann and Associate Managing Editor Ryan Davis are our resident Tony Hawk 3 experts, though Greg Kasavin and Andrew Park are aspiring pros. They both eagerly anticipated the PC port of this hit console game, because the gameplay of Tony Hawk 3--far beyond a mere simulation of skateboarding--is simply incredible. If you're looking for an outstanding action game, look no further.
Sid Meier's SimGolf (2001)
Street Price: $29

News Editor Trey Walker was bent on designing the world's best golf course in SimGolf, and was able to get started really quickly thanks to the game's extremely accessible interface. SimGolf, jointly created by famed designers Sid Meier and Will Wright, is ultimately a very fun game. A number of us who have no real interest in golf still took to playing a lot of SimGolf.
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter (2001)
Street Price: $19

All of GameSpot's PC editors were really impressed with last year's Serious Sam: The First Encounter, so our hopes were high for the follow-up game. It turned out to be everything we expected and more--Serious Sam: The Second Encounter is the best action game for your $20, and it's far superior to most games that cost fully twice as much. This zany, extremely intense shooter is consistently fun.
