Role-Playing Game of the Year

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Publisher: Interplay
Developer: BioWare

"The plot, teamed with great graphics, incredible voice acting, and fantastic music, will surely draw you into the world of Baldur's Gate II, where you will willingly stay. Believe it or not, in the game there is even a hint that reminds you to take your meals, just in case you get so engrossed in the RPG that you forget to eat. It is that good."

Runner-up

Diablo II
Publisher: Blizzard
Developer: Blizzard North

screenshot

"Bottom line: This is another excellent game from an excellent company. If low-res graphics bother you, don't worry: Once you start hacking your way through dozens of Diablo's minions, you'll forget all about your monitor's setting. While the storyline is shallow, and while the save point system may give you fits, this is an amazingly fun and addictive game with tons of replay potential. Diablo II could very easily take up permanent residence on your hard drive."
