Top 10 Overall Best in Show

GameSpot has always been committed to giving every major gaming platform its dues. However, our editors, each having a broad knowledge of gaming across all platforms, also strive to look at the gaming industry in broader terms. For each of us, the question isn't about which console "won" at E3 this year--the bottom line is that we're most interested in the games and not in the systems themselves. More and more gamers are beginning to feel the same way. As more and more game titles are showing up on multiple platforms simultaneously, the notion of gaming platforms is beginning to break down, and all we have left to consider are the qualities of the games we're playing--not so much the qualities of the systems we're playing them on. Perhaps that's the way it should be. And so, this year we wish to present, for the very first time, a countdown of GameSpot's overall top 10 best games of E3. All of these games are mentioned elsewhere in these awards, but here, we reiterate their greatness and show you how we collectively believe they stack up against each other.

10. Steel Battalion (Xbox)
Developed by: Capcom
Published by: Capcom
Release Date: September 2002

Steel Battalion was probably the most ridiculous game at the show, thanks to the monstrosity of a controller required to play it. Most every one of us was stunned when we first laid eyes on that thing--but then we witnessed the game itself, which looks every bit as cool. We hope that Steel Battalion lives up to how amazing its dual-pronged controller is. And we have a sneaking suspicion that it will. Capcom isn't known for taking risks, so the fact that it's bringing Steel Battalion out in this country must mean that the company is pretty confident in this game. We can't wait to hunker down with it for ourselves.

09. Auto Modellista (PS2)
Developed by: Capcom
Published by: Capcom
Release Date: October 2002

Easily one of the coolest-looking driving games on display at E3, Auto Modellista is another big surprise from Capcom--the company may be known for a lot of things, but it's not famous for its racing games. After Auto Modellista, though, it probably will be. This game sports the keenest-looking car racing artwork since Speed Racer, yet the huge lineup of cars featured in the game are all real-world licensed automobiles. Auto Modellista will also support online play and will pack in some interesting customization features, allowing players to really get into the experience. The racing action itself already plays great--we can't wait to see more of it.

08. Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided (PC)
Developed by: Sony Online Entertainment
Published by: LucasArts
Release Date: Q4 2002

Our number one top PC game of E3 from last year has come a long ways. While some of the wow factor we experienced at the unveiling of the game in 2001 has subsided over the last 12 months, this year we got to see a whole lot of Star Wars Galaxies in action. So it's wow factor all over again. In short, of all the dozens of massively multiplayer games currently in the works, this is the one that we're truly the most excited about, and for a variety of reasons--not the least of which is the ability to play as a female Wookiee. LucasArts is claiming that Star Wars Galaxies will ship late this year. We'd better start camping out in front of our local Electronics Boutique tomorrow.
