Best Story

Over the years, games have proven to be a viable storytelling medium. They combine the multimedia elements and production values of movies with the length and depth of novels--and of course, they're interactive, which ideally lets you experience the story in a game as vividly as possible. GameSpot's Best Story award goes to the one game that's most striking because of the quality of its original story, its characters, and its storytelling techniques. Here are our five finalists for this award:

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

(XBOX, PC)
Publisher: VU Games
Developer: Starbreeze
This tightly scripted tale of a criminal anti-hero busting out of the galaxy's hardest prison is as compelling as any sci-fi action blockbuster. In fact, it's a better story than the game's cinematic counterpart.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

(PS2)
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Rockstar North
What begins as a modern tale of survival in the hard streets of the inner city soon takes on some surprising twists and turns, resulting in a crime epic more than worthy of the Grand Theft Auto name.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

(PS2)
Publisher: Konami
Developer: KCEJ
Eccentric characters, deep philosophy, numerous twists and turns, and plenty of pure, hard-boiled action combines to make Metal Gear Solid 3's story one of the best aspects of the game.

Myst IV Revelation

(PC)
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
The Myst saga takes on new meaning in the richly detailed, long-awaited fourth installment in the series, which once again focuses on the brilliant inventor Atrus and his greedy sons.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

(GC)
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Intelligent Systems
Mario doesn't just save the princess here--he becomes a famous pro wrestler, a space explorer, and much more in this whimsical, memorable, sharply-written story.
And the Winner is...
