Link and company's debut on Nintendo's latest console couldn't have come under closer scrutiny. Whether because of the criticism for looking too much like a rehash of the Nintendo 64 Zelda titles or because of the backlash against the game's more cutesy, cel-shaded look, compared to the more mature-looking graphics that had been shown in a GameCube tech demo before the system's launch, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker had an uphill battle when it came to winning people over. However, when The Wind Waker was released, nearly every Zelda fan breathed a huge sigh of relief, as the game turned out to be yet another instant classic for the Zelda franchise. More importantly, it stands as the single best action adventure game of the year, even amid some stiff competition from other outstanding games.

The Wind Waker is a phenomenal game through and through. It captures the essence of its Nintendo 64 predecessors, both in its excellent and well-rounded combat system and in its extraordinarily good puzzles. The Wind Waker also brings multiple innovations to the table, including the new mechanic of sailing. Since the game takes place in a world made up mostly of water, you spend much of your time sailing Link from island to island, and along the way, you encounter all sorts of enemies, hidden goodies, and fun minigames in the vast oceanic expanse. Another key factor is the game's absolutely unparalleled level of graphical polish. The cel-shaded look that everyone was so up in arms about turned out to be simply brilliant, giving the world of The Wind Waker a definitive and inspired look and feel. Every island, town, dungeon, and even the very ocean itself looks amazing, and, coupled with the game's excellent character designs, they make for an awesome visual experience. Simply put, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is as breathtaking an action adventure game as you'll find, and it's simply an amazing game in every respect.
