Best Online Game on Xbox

With the advent of the Xbox Live service, Microsoft's console has single-handedly proven that console gamers are ready to start playing games online. This extremely compelling way to play lets gamers compete with others from around the nation or around the world. Online games will be much more common in 2003, but the Xbox had a number of impressive offerings this year alone, the best of which is:

MechAssault

With the launch of Xbox Live earlier this year, there were suddenly a lot of great online games to choose from. But one game definitely rises above the rest, delivering a unique experience that simply isn't available anywhere else. That game is Microsoft's giant robot shooter, MechAssault.

Aside from merely being one of the only immediately accessible mech games on the market, MechAssault does a great job with its online mode, delivering exciting eight-player action in a variety of modes. The game merges the pick-up-and-play mentality of your average first-person shooter with the inherent strategy of the MechWarrior universe, playing off of mech matchups especially well. Want to use a big, heavily armored Atlas? Then get ready for the smaller, faster mechs to run circles around you as you struggle to keep up. But if you can put some distance between yourself and the smaller mechs, you can destroy them before they get close enough to cause a threat. This sort of strategy is even more apparent in the game's team modes, where packs of smaller mechs can pose an incredible danger to even the largest opponents.

While other Xbox online games may have provided for more visceral, fast-paced action in 2002, none of them are as polished and as well-done as Microsoft's MechAssault, making it an easy choice as this year's best online game.
