Making a sequel to 2001's best-selling Grand Theft Auto III must have been a daunting task. While it would have been extremely easy for Rockstar to make a few minimal changes and ship another GTA game that merely cashed in on the success of its predecessor, Vice City instead goes in an entirely different direction, resulting in a game that adds new elements to the GTA formula and imbues the series with a fully realized sense of style.

From the impressively cast voice acting to the exaggerated, TV- and movie-inspired mid-'80s look of the game, the style in Vice City runs extremely deep. This tight integration really makes the city feel alive as the game's lead character, Tommy Vercetti, goes from out-of-town thug to a beachfront crime lord.

With improved mission design and a more active storyline, not to mention an incredible soundtrack of hours and hours of '80s hits, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City does what many thought impossible: It improves and expands upon 2001's Video Game of the Year in many meaningful ways.
