Game graphics continue to improve drastically every year. As the most immediately noticeable element in any game, graphics will always be extremely important to players' experiences. Besides the artists who design the actual look of each game, programmers are charged with the highly competitive responsibility of creating increasingly impressive 3D graphics engines to bring their games to life. Here is the winner of Best Graphics (Technical) on PlayStation 2:

Ratchet & Clank

After a year or so of seeing games ship on a console, you begin to see telltale signs of the system's limitations. The PlayStation 2, for example, had at one point begun to fall into a specific graphical profile: PS2 games generally have a fair amount of aliasing, blurry textures, and fairly muddy environments. Some systems stay in that rut, while others turn the corner and show off yet another level of graphical enhancements that, when compared with the average game, seem almost impossible. Ratchet & Clank, from Sony and Insomniac Games, is that show-off game that raises the bar for what a PlayStation 2 game can and should look like.

What truly sets Ratchet & Clank apart is its great sense of personality. The game's fluid facial animation really brings its characters to life, making that level of personality possible. The other technical aspects of the game, such as its huge levels and lengthy draw distance, also go a long way toward creating a first-rate visual presentation.

On top of that, Ratchet & Clank runs at a consistently smooth frame rate, ensuring that the fantastic gameplay isn't compromised by performance issues. While the other nominees for this award have their own graphical high points, Ratchet & Clank is the most consistently outstanding of the bunch, making it our choice for Best Graphics (Technical) on PlayStation 2.

Other Nominees:
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Medal of Honor Frontline
State of Emergency
WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth
