Special Achievement Awards: Best Music on PlayStation 2

Nothing enhances a gaming experience quite like a stirring musical score can. In the past two decades, game soundtracks have evolved from simple series of digitized beeps into moving, professional compositions. The best of these are created specifically to enhance particular scenes in their respective games. Here is the winner of Best Music on PlayStation 2:

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Rockstar North

Hours and hours of music taken directly from the 1980s: No, it isn't a late-night ad for a compilation of hits. It's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Rockstar's newest freestyle crime game. As we all know, a crime spree is only as good as the quality of its soundtrack. So we're happy to say that Vice City delivers the highest-quality crime sprees in the business.

With the game's radio station format separating music by genre and each genre containing more than enough music to fill a CD, Vice City's soundtrack is impressive on paper. But in action it's even more striking. There's something about stealing a car while listening to Mr. Mister's "Broken Wings" that just gives us chills.

While the GameSpot staff normally favors original soundtracks over licensed ones in choosing our Best Music awards, the length and exceptional quality of the compilation found in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City made it an extremely simple choice. The music sets the tone for the entire game and really helps push the game past "game" territory and more toward the "experience" side of the spectrum.

Other Nominees:

Gitaroo-Man
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Medal of Honor Frontline
