![]() Most Deserving of a Remake This year we saw the reemergence of a number of classic games in newly revamped form. We were glad to see games like Shinobi, Rygar: The Legendary Adventure, and Contra: Shattered Soldier manage to more or less successfully reinvent the classic gameplay formulas we still remember fondly. But those games got us thinking--there's one old favorite of ours that seriously needs to make a comeback:
Publisher: Capcom Developer: Capcom
Bionic Commando seriously needs to be reinvented as a 3D action game. While a fine remake of the original was released for the Game Boy Color a couple of years ago, we'd really like to see the Nintendo Entertainment System classic restored and refurbished on current-generation consoles. Though Bionic Commando first appeared in the arcades, the NES version combined strategy and role-playing elements with innovative side-scrolling action sequences to make for a game quite unlike any other. The catch in Bionic Commando is that the main character is unable to jump--he can only get over or across obstacles by using his grappling-hook-like bionic arm, which doubles as a defensive weapon. This made for some unique and memorable action sequences, and the game had one heck of a surprise twist at the end, to boot. Many games have ripped off the bionic-arm mechanic from Bionic Commando, even great ones like Metroid Prime. It's safe to say that the grappling hook thing is in style when it comes to games, so we'd seriously love to see Capcom bring back the Bionic Commando in all his spiky-haired, sunglasses-wearing glory.
