Best Name for a Game

What's in a name? Well, a lot. Gamers love good game titles, especially ones they can abbreviate with catchy acronyms. That being the case, it's surprising just how many boring game titles there are. Then again, maybe we're just jaded by all the monosyllabic action game titles out there or all the gratuitous subtitles we see on virtually every game that comes out. As such, we wish to present this extremely important, highly prestigious award to the one game that what we honestly believe has the best title of any game released this past year:

The Pinball of the Dead

Publisher: Sega
Developer: Sega

Though the GameSpot editors' absolute favorite 2002 game title was Necrocide: The Dead Must Die, NovaLogic, the would-be publisher of that PC first-person shooter, unfortunately shelved the project, putting it out of the running for this award. The winner of this award is still quite deserving, though, as The Pinball of the Dead is both absurdly funny and spot-on in describing what the game is all about.

For what it's worth, the game wasn't a shoe-in. Divine Divinity is an incredibly absurd name, Gitaroo-Man is cross-cultural silliness it its best, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance makes a cool reference to a great band. But there's more to the amazingly named The Pinball of the Dead than all that. The game could have just as easily been called The House of the Dead Pinball, but Sega maintained the knowingly funny edge of the franchise with this ludicrous title, which is why The Pinball of the Dead wins the award for Best Name for a Game. Here's hoping the "of the Dead" series continues to broaden its horizons.

Other Nominees:

Divine Divinity
Gitaroo-Man
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
