![]() Biggest News Item A lot of news breaks in the games industry every single day. We at GameSpot constantly strive to stay on top of current events in gaming, so it's not often that we're caught off guard by an announcement. Yet sometimes the entire industry and gamers alike are sent reeling by a major news release. With the Biggest News Item award, we wish to commemorate what we believe to be the biggest gaming news piece of the year:
With the introduction of new consoles last year, we expected that there would be fierce competition and a number of surprise maneuvers on the part of the major industry players this year. But no doubt the news that resonated most with many gamers was the news that Nintendo and Square had agreed to work together to return the beloved Final Fantasy series of role-playing games to its former place on Nintendo consoles. Nintendo revealed last March that it would allocate money from Fund Q--a fund intended to encourage GameCube game development--to a new Square studio named Game Designers Studio. While it's still too early for the deal to bear fruit, it did lead to the announcement of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicle, which will reportedly take advantage of the GameCube-Game Boy Advance connectivity feature.
