The Game Boy Advance is home to a surprising variety of games. Some are pixel-perfect ports of some of our favorite classics, while others are original titles that prove that 2D gaming is alive and well. Yet many new games exclusive to the Game Boy Advance end up being disappointingly short, while the ports of classic games--as exciting as it can be to have them in portable format--are still technically just rehashes of games we've played before. That's why the decision to name Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis as our Game of the Year on Game Boy Advance was an easy one. This is a purely original game designed exclusively for Nintendo's portable system, yet it has all the depth, style, gameplay, and lasting value of many of our favorite 16-bit-era console role-playing games. Furthermore, the strategic gameplay and surprisingly intricate plot of Tactics Ogre make it much more thought provoking than the average game. All this adds up to an experience that we'd happily have played on any gaming platform--the fact that we could play it on the go was just icing on the cake.

We like to think of Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis as sort of a spiritual follow-up to Advance Wars, still one of the finest Game Boy Advance games and our award winner in this category from last year. We can only hope that more developers and publishers take a chance and use the GBA as a platform for still more strategic games. Until more arrive, we'll be playing Tactics Ogre and Advance Wars.
